Bah, after reading the other posts I think I understand better now. Those that already have been charged and are guilty shouldn't be allowed at a con. Sucky thing is, is that a con is a public event, not a "fur-pile."

and public event or no, ifthey can bar troublemakers from cons, they should be able to bar sex offenders as well

It's easy really,
1. Have their pic and name on file.
2. Ask them nicely once to leave
3. If they refuse call the cops. If the cops don't come in 5 minuets have "bob" the really big guard bust their knees in with a bat and drag them off the grounds.
4. Call the cops again.

actually it would just be easier to have their info on file, and no allow them con registry without makeing a big public scene of it, no violence needed
if things got out of hand and they wished to complain of discrimination, then they can expect the reasons for their
exclusion to be displayed to their authority of choice,and have record be made of it

that's the thing any good crook can reg in someone elses name. so when they check in OR are spotted after sneaking in you can kick them out and maybe report it to their P.O.s and they get to spend a good time in jail. but if things get too... out of hand use your security to your advantage and get them out. be sure to have someone take pix and record what's going on.

boonjagga already pointed out the biggest flaw in the idea, though if they were to pull a stunt like identity theft forthe sake of convention going, then i think they are running the risk of far more than banishment from a convention.

not really most your creeps will simply just register as say "bob smith" or buy a ticket at the door. it's really easy.

Point of fact I got into Sakuracon (06) in Seattle with no questions. I simply paid the door fee and volunteered to help set up. Now before you start thinking I'm a "bad guy" I simply test security and the flaws they bring.

Reputation systems are difficult - it's a really thorny problem. In a way, you'd be trying to solve the same problem that Google is. To give you an idea of how hard it is, Google is having a lot of trouble right now, and Google is throwing a zillion dollars and a thousand PhDs at the problem.

Yeah, the beardy parts of the Internet are talking about it lately. For example, Jeff Atwood wrote about it, and there are links there, which lead to more links, etc. Google's having an issue because people have a strong monetary incentive to figure out how to effectively lie to Google about reputation. In a similar way, measuring reputation the way you (and I!) want to - people have a strong incentive to figure out how to beat that reputation algorithm. Which means it's gonna be hard and difficult.
