Besides, what kind of moron doesn't take a few moments to tie the rope around their hips, at the very least? I mean, you don't have to be a mountain climber or a Boy Scout to do that. Then an arm is free to hold onto your dog.

she had it around her waist in some shape or form or else her entire body would of been hanging when she was being pulled up. She just lost her grip on the dog due to the force of the water

I suppose she probably didn't mean to, but was slipping and had to grab on with her other hand. I could see that if she hadn't, her and the dog would've shared a similar fate.

You guys need a serious reality check. 500 people are dead because of this flood and the numbers are rising. Some poor woman was trying to save both their lives and was slammed against a torrent of water and then a building. I don't think any of the people calling her an 'moron' have ever been in a crisis situation. She was terrified that she wasn't going to get pulled up, it's a survival instinct. You guys are acting like she threw the dog into the flood water.

Hmm. Realistically and sincerily speaking, I would prioritise saving a human life over that of an animal in such a situation every time without exception or second thought. You can buy a new dog if you need a new one, but you can't get a new human in the pet-store.

Having been caught in a fast moving river current before, I can testify to the fact it's hard to hold anything and control your movement in such water. I'm sure a flood is exponentially worse. Better she live than both die.

If my dad is any indication (he spent two years in south america), she's actually yelling about the fact that she dropped the dog and that they have to find him.

Even though i love my dog, if its between me or the dog...it be a horrible decicion, but I'd rather save myself, of course the dog will be in my memories, and no one could replace that.

After reading all of the comments of the people claiming she was a monster for releasing her dog into the water. I find it that furries sometimes just say that because its a puppy, and "oh my God who would do that to a poor puppy!?".

In my opinion, I think she was under alot of stress due to the fact her house was being TORN apart around her and she wanted to get to safety as fast as possible. Also she tried to keep her dog with her as long as possible but only let it go due to the fact there was alot of water rushing over her as she was being pulled to safety. In the translation at the bottom it said her dog bit her too. I'm sure I wouldnt be able to hold onto a dog under those conditions. Its not like she did it on purpose -__-

My friend who speaks fluent portuguese says that she was screaming "my child, my life..." because she lost her dog too.

I know what you mean. the most we can say about that is "poor dog" and that's it. she did try to save the dog!!! she was under a lot of stress and etc. BUT there was a way to save the dog's life, like some people above said. and we have seen this before. people saving their pets life under the most life-threatening situations. i saw it in "the world's most amazing videos", a guy saved not only one but two dogs from drowning in his van. And the van was about to fall into a giant hole in the ground caused by a broken pipe. That pipe was holding the van from falling deeper. He could've drowned too, but still he went to save his dogs.

I was referring to the people who condemn her for "not trying" My friend told me she was a 62 year old widow, and that her dog was her life when he translated it for me. I just dont like people who judge for something they probably cant even understand xD (seeing as to how it was in Portuguese).

raras são as coisas que valem mais que a minha vida, pareçe egoísta, mas pensa comigo, eu extendo a mão com o pé numa faixa de pedestres, e eles passam de qualquer jeito (me ignorando) se eu for pro meio da faixa e afronta-los, eles podem tanto parar, como podem me atropelar de qualquer jeito, eu te pergunto, vale a pena correr esse risco?

por isso, não se deprima, eu me sinto péssimo quando as pessoas ficam tristes, mas por favor, tenha em mente que no caso de qualquer desastre (não necessariamente um desastre, até uma pequena decisão) a pessoa fará a melhor decisão...

por isso eu espero que vc faça tbm e n deixe isso de deixar pensativo...

I looked that video in the local TV news, I get shocked in a few seconds but in the circumstances as there, I would do the same.

She probably did it to survive. But no, I would not have. If I had a pet it would be because I had a connection with it and enjoyed it's company. Yeah, you kind of have to be in the situation, but I view animals as innocent creatures having to suffer under our rule. And honestly I put others lives above mine. Went swimming in a lake with my cousin who went to far into the deep side and almost drowned, taking me with her. I just decide to stay down and try and keep her above water until my sister was able to get her. For others it's not that easy though. Would you do the same as the lady?
