Well, unless you're planning to build your own avatar from scratch, you'll need quite a few more Lindens than what you start with to buy yourself a furry av. Most people buy avatars from Luskwood, but there are plenty "brands" to choose from, some quite expensive (up to $2000 in in-game money). Luskwood avatars are around $900.

It would also be best to tweak your preferences when it comes to graphics. Even though SL automatically sets your settings based on your system, you will still lag, lag is everywhere, key is how to handle it.

Do a search for "UFOnly", which stands for Upload Fee Only. It's a clothing store that only charges based on how much it cost to upload the textures and the like, which makes it very affordable for beginners. When it comes to clothing, if you like, I can help you find other places.

Money can be tricky to come by. If you plan on building things or making clothes, you could most likely start planning towards that to make cash in-game. Otherwise, you'll have to probably buy Lindens. $20 dollars (American) buys around $5000 in-game, depending on how the exchange rate is. Otherwise, you can try playing games like Devil May Cry/SLingo to make money, but since it's a game of chance, you won't win as much as you'd like.
