OpenGL can be a pain in the ass. I heard McCue went crazy, but some feedback over time from other second years suggests that he's actually somewhat his typical self.
OpenGL really isn't bad once you get by the REDICULOUSLY annoying, apparent "bugs" that sprout up.
DirectX isn't that bad. However, it is much more "Shader" oriented.
If you keep up with OpenGL, DirectX won't be as bad, because the concepts are the same.
Is your first assignment to draw your initials in 3D? We had to do our college username's when we did it.
I didn't mind openGL vs DirectX. It was okay. DirectX has more built in functionality though. I agree though. I prefer c# to c++. Managed code is awesome. :3
I am not liking either, just because I am a AI/Game logic, Engine (not graphic) coder, etc, I like make pretty patterns =[, and OpenGL is not pretty XD
Heh, I can understand totally. I don't do anything with either any more for the most part. When testing implementation for AI or other stuff I use xna cause its easy.
OpenGL kinda pissed me off because when I reformatted my computer and upgraded to Windows 7, the one game I saved started bugging me about OpenGL, and consequently didn't look as nice.
Though I feel like an idiot because it took me forever to figure out that I just needed to update my graphics card's drivers. <_<
I'm so bad about remembering to update my drivers.
And I realized you were studying it as a language, the journal just reminded me that I only recently fixed that issue, and only because Prey outright wouldn't run until I did.
I know, once you used C#, you wouldn't want to go back. Although if you use C#, you wouldn't have as much options as using DX11 natively. I don't think you can use DX11 by C# either, XNA C# only support DX9.0c. If you want to high performance 3D games, you still need C++ though. But, for our level of XBLA graphics, I think they are very impressive already.
in the future, XNA will be available to work with DirectX11 =], it is just a matter of time! C# is a beautiful language... even though a good design can transcend any language ^^
But, you have to live with the fact that it will always lag behind the newest DX. I think it is fine for most people anyway. It cannot be helped, the managed version is extra step from the native fundation.

I don't know why, the best graphics card to learn OpenGL are Nvidia, becuase they have a good support to OpenGL command.
With ATI card, OpenGL is supported but still being a bit defficient.
About Intel cards and others... well high end of intel I never test them. Low end Intel suck...
Te deseo mucha suerte con eso sin embargo :3
