SyFy's Face Off

Being a horror fan and general fan of creatures, make up and special effects...it really was no surprise that Syfy's newest show "Face Off" grabbed my attention.
What "Face Off" is a "reality competition" for make up/special effect artists, instead of cooking and making dresses...the artists are creating creatures and characters from their demented imaginations.
The show follows the same kind of format that shows like "Project Runway" and "Top Chef" uses, first there's a small challenge where the winner wins immunity and/or some kind of advantage for the main challenge. Then there's the main challange where there's a winner and a loser, with the loser being eliminated from the challenge.
Now just like many "reality competitions", there's various drama here and there between contestants. (Some of it feeling rather forced.)
For the premiere episode, the artists had to do a quick make up job of a face on a model using items in the room they were in. Some of the stuff was pretty neat, one guy looked like he had a boquet of flowers rammed in his face like a prom night gone really bad.
As for the main challenge, the artists were paired into teams and had to make a half human/half animal hybrid. Now they wern't given full range of freedom, the groups had to choose from a black beetle, an ostrich and a elephant.
Some of the work was pretty damn impressive, though others certainly crashed and burned. One osterich looked liked "Fantasia gone bad", and one of the elephants looked more like a mutant instead of a "hybrid".
Now while the show borrows the same formula as other reality competitions, I like that the judges don't just observe the work from a far, they also get up close to inspect the work. it was also refreshing to see none of them be the obvious "nasty judge" or the "You're so special, good job" judge. If they like the work, they'll let the artists know...if not, all three will tear them apart.
So overall I do like this show so far, and what's being shown in the preview does look good. (The next episode features nude bodypainting)
In other news, SyFy also shows it's fucking desperate. An upcoming show is "Marcels Quantam Kitchen" (Yes, the same Marcel from Top Chef), nuff' said.
