I love the game and enjoy the open endedness :3

Get yourself lost in huge underground caves, try to find your way out without getting blow'd up. The deeper you go and the more resources you collect, the more tension there is and more elements of danger to make it out alive with your spoils.
THEN use all those things you mined from digging down to building upwards, making a grand fortress to your greatness. This, and how safe you can make your environment. Such is the measure of progress.
