Only seen the first one. I was absolutely blown away by it. I've heard bad things about 2 and 3 though, and knowing that they have almost entirely different writers and directors with each one doesn't really ease my doubts
First movie was a classic: a low budget mind fuck that I can vividly recall as I type this, twisted, haunting, and had a very deranged sense of humor. Also when ya think about it, it's got a rather grim comment on the dynamics of social hierarchies.
Second movie was more of a hyper beefed up version of the previous film, though it seems like it's handled by a completely different director, has a somewhat downbeat but 'saw it coming a mile away' ending.
Third movie is a prequel, and it does attempt to homeage the original film, but it becomes sort of a predictable ret-con of the last installments (trapping characters in elaborate sets, employing death devices, raise tension amongst survivors, and have a 'SURPRISE I'M A INSIDER FOR THE SECRET SHADOWY GOVERNMENT AGENCY!' responsible for the deadly 'death-o-matic',and eventually someone gets out.) I'll give the movie one point for originality of showing the 'operators' of the death maze, and the brief touch of the moral crisis the characters have with doing their job.
Ultimately, just stick with the first movie.
