I don't know why - it's just you take the hardest of all rock, combine it with the improvisation-happy feel of jazz, and you get something so amazing that it will either destroy worlds or piss off people. So far, it's an even 50/50. I love jazz fusion (especially Frank Zappa's and Chicago's takes on the genre), but some of you might equate it to Herbie Hancock's Head Hunters and the poor lyricism of Tony Williams' Lifetime. However, those two are good - I love me some Head Hunters and Emergency!
Then again, jazz fusion should not be an excuse to be bombast. It should bring your band back to its roots - it should be one long jam session. Chicago did that for their first three albums in many ways (while tripping with others, like the "Travel Suite" - which contained 5 jam sessions on one side of an LP) and Zappa did it up to Over-nite Sensation/Apostrophe (').
You never expected a furfag to be like this, didn't ya?
