Sometimes I go zone out and watch tv too, or arrange something with friends that takes my mind off stuff. Depends on why I'm down.
Sleep helps too. I <3 morning apathy.
First, don't believe what the depression tells you. Just like when you're drunk, when you're depressed your judgment goes to Hell. You see the bad side of everything, and when you dwell on those thoughts soon you can't see the good side of anything. It can spiral horribly. Don't let yourself get sucked into brooding.
Second, make sure you feel good. Be sure you're fed, rested, and hydrated. Make sure you've done something productive today, so you have a reason to feel good about *yourself*. Get what sunshine and fresh air you can, as well.
After that it gets tricky. Talking to friends is usually the most effective thing to do. After that any hobby that really intensely involves your mind. It's usually much harder to start doing something than to enjoy it once you've started.
I put on a track of my favorite music--the kind from which I can close my eyes and feel it as the glorious waves pass me through, right to my very core. Upon that point, I then cease my existance by drowing it in some slight meditation. If I can simply relax, even for a little bit, everything will seem to me all the better. Bonus points for having and thus cuddling something adorable on hand, like a pet kitten. And of course, it's likely a very unhealthy method, but I like to think my insermountable apathy carrys me through at times, if for no other reason than to keep the particularly soul-crushing thoughts at bay.
Not exactly everybody's scene, but hey, it works okay for me. Hope you found my input of at least some value.
Whenever life gets you down, keeps you wearin' a frown, and the gravy train has left you behind...
And when you're all out of hope, down at the end of your rope, and nobody's there to throw you a line...
If you ever get so low that you don't know which way to go, come on and take a walk in my shoes...
Never worry 'bout a thing, got the world on a string, 'cause I've got the cure for all of my blues...

Sadly, I have no pet animals. The landlord won't allow 'em.

It doesn't help too much though.
