Actually, you'd be surprised by how many homeless and drifters have not only internet access, but their own laptops. I used to fool around downtown where our train tracks were, and would (much to my mother's worry) meet and greet the trainhoppers that would stroll through town. Probably about two out of every five that I met had their own facebook, twitter or myspace which they'd keep track of where they had gone before.

It's a really interesting community between hoppers!

Yeah, they have high class homeless down there. I've seen many beggars with MP3 players and cell phones.

Cool story BTW, I always wanted to be a hobo, just never had the nerve.

I learned a lot of cool stuff from them. I think I could pull it off, but I kinda like sleeping on something clean. ^^
My best friend hopped his way from New Orleans all the way up to Chicago when he moved, and then I met a girl who was a professional model, and she just used trains to get from shoot to shoot, and slept in 24 hour diners.

I also learned that places like Pizza Hut throw out their smaller to-go pizzas when the store closes, and are required to keep the shelf stocked with four at a time. They have to throw them out even if they just made them. If you catch them as they close, they actually give away any unsold pizzas! Hobos eat good.
