Alpha Protocol. If you play it like a shooter, you will be sad. If you play it like an RPG, you will love it. Its a really underrated game with a fantastic dialogue system that actually, totally, truthfully makes a difference in what happens in the game and allows you to pick a grey moral area and rewards you for it.

Killing Floor and Monday Night Combat are fun too. KF is a very arcade-y LFD, very simple but very well executed game (has some of the best sound design I've heard in a long time). MNC is like TF2 meets DotA, and even if you can't kill people in other shooters worth a damn you can still greatly contribute to a team through other means.

And I'm pretty sure all of these are <$20

Metro 2033 is entertaining. Just be sure you stock up on filters...

Borderlands is nice, if you have the people to play it with. Playing alone is boring.

Torchlight is awesome too, but because I'm hardcore and play on 'Hardcore Very Hard'. X3

Zeno Clash is the only other game I can think of that counts as Shiny though, but even on an old engine, it looks really good.

Ya.... I didn't really highlight "pretty"-only games. Games have to have a little more substance than that to be fun :P
