I made it 8 days before I cracked. That's 1/5 of the way to sainthood.
There was a book my brother owned when I was a child that was about a prince and his 7(?) friends who were on some sort of journey. Each friend had a talent that came in handy. One of his friends was a snakelike fellow who stretched across a chasm to form a bridge for them. The art of that one page, and that one character, has stuck with me ever since. But I don't know what the book was.

Although the basis for the story might be the same as some people here have already hypothesized, the artwork was a lot more polished.
