Con newbie looking for general information and oppinions

Back and alive as of July 2020. we'll see how long that lasts XD
I've really wanted to go to a con since I joined this site, and I think it might finally possible. I live in NY, and (as far as I'm aware) FAU is the closest to where I live, and is coming up soon. I dunno how many people that watch me (or more so will read this) actually GO to cons, but any information would be helpful.
now continuing from where I was, I'm thinking of going to FAU4, but I haven't payed for anything yet, this is because A. I'm not sure if I'm gonna go still B. there's also AnthroCon only a little further away and more expensive (not to mention hotels seem to be filling up already according to the website), which I've heard much more about and people seem to love it C. I'm really shy and D. I've never gone that far on my own. I'd be driving if I went and FAU is a 4-5 (5+ with stops) hour trip (AC would be closer to 7 hours)
I dunno what I should bring too if I was to go. I know money, basic care supplies cloths, but beyond that I'm not too sure. if anyone has any information, professional or opinionated, please tell me what you know ^.^;
one additional unrelated note, I've never even been to a fur-meet or met another furry in person, maybe going to a con would be a bit much of a start? I dunno, but I've so far failed to meet people in other fashions other than to only know them online, which while nice, leave something to be desired.
on an even more unrelated side note, I'm bored, anyone want to do anything? Pokemon? Steam Game? SL? IM? seriously, I've done pretty much nothing all day, and I'm bored, and almost no one I know has been able to be contacted
