Nickelodeon has posted a teaser for their TMNT revival series in 2012:

It's... interesting. Obviously, it doesn't reveal much. It does confirm that it will be CG animated. In the best light, the characters look like 3D versions of the comic book counterparts.
Myself, I grew up with the cheesy 1980s cartoon and I've never been a fan of the edgy serious direction of the last series back in the 2000s. I know that was closer to the original tone of the comic, but I think that the serious episodes of the 2000s series are really boring. It's really hard for me to relate to tales of feudal Japan and shogun warriors.
I don't know what the 2012 series will do in terms of tone. But given how awesome Turtles Forever was, they have a tough act to follow.

I also grew up with the 1987 cartoon. I found out about the comics a few years later when I was in a drugstore with parents, and saw an Archie comics issue of TMNT. I went to a local comic store and looked for more ninjaturtle comics, found out about mirage studios and started collecting both companies runs. In 1996 I found the mirage website and learned about all the other stuff available and went hard core collector.
I found TMNT boxers with the VIACOM logo on the tag at Walmart a few months back, and that's the ONLY thing I've seen put out by since the buyout from Peter Laird.
I'm not very happy with the low detail design of the characters. I'm the kind of person that has always been craving high levels of detail. They look bland and too.... blocky/shapey.
I rather enjoyed the 2003 TMNT as it went more toward the more violent/realistic turtles (language/behavior/situations) The older 87's cartoon went WAAAAAY out there to extremes just for laughs, it was after all completely directed at children. The 2003 series tried to bring the comic format back, and still reach out to those that were now young/old adults, not just children.
It'd be interesting if we could find out what happened to the live action Hallmark christmas special that was supposed to happen back in the early 2000's, as well as what's going on with the new movie that was supposed to be being done by Paramount.
I always wanted a darker edgier, bloody TMNT cartoon, something the older #TMNT and TMNT-L mailing lists of the 90's dubbed as an HBO series hopeful, like Spawn. Now that Laird no longer has ties to control the movies/cartoons, it's more of a possibility, but still unlikely.
The 1980s cartoon doesn't hold up that well these days. It was too silly, even compared to other action cartoons at the time, and like you say, it goes to great lengths for jokes that aren't that funny. But the 1980s cartoon was really simple, and it was generally happy and optimistic. In comparison, the last TMNT (and really, most action cartoons today) are quite dark and serious. Maybe it's just a reflection of the times we live in, but I get a little tired of it seeing how everyone is doing it. I saw that new Thundercats trailer, for example, and I thought to myself "Who the heck watched Thundercats for the backstory?" Maybe the villain-of-the-week format doesn't fit TMNT, but why doesn't anyone do it now? It's like it's beneath the writers.
I'm sure that when Nickelodeon begins their campaign, they'll probably replace the site with some generic corporate poo. But it was fun while it lasted.
