you wish you could draw like some of us.. I wish I could ANIMATE as well as you. :)

The idea of being able to animate well without being able to draw well is supposed to not happen.

Which means that if I manage to draw better....I should animate better. Right? ...right? ._.

But seriously, I think all artist get this feeling every now and then...or all the time. You're an awesome animator. :) I personally don't think that drawing skill and animation skills always go hand in hand. That's just me. I've got anatomy down (on animals at least x3), but motion is just something that I have a hard time with. ^^:

I am frustrated, coz the art is supposed to come with the animation, everyone says so! x.x

But you're not supposed to be able to animate well, hand drawn, without being able to draw really well.

So I always figured, work on the animation, the art will come along for the ride...

That's debatable. ^^; I think that there are of course similarities between the two, but there's two different sets of skills required to improve either way. Being able to draw well doesn't guarantee that you can animate well. I have the hardest time figuring out movement sometimes, and especially laying out shots and camera movements.

But the two do go hand in hand and I'll admit that. If I can't figure out how to draw it, then usually I won't be able to animate it. So if I want to animate something then I'll have to work on drawing it first to nail down anatomy.

I highly disagree... the whole reason there were different work stations for still-shot and 'tweener specialists in older hand-drawn animation studios is because both are needed to make good, solid animation. Stills are great and needed from the storyboard, but if the motion doesn't have that spark of life in-between those still shots, you're left with a project that looked great on the billboards, but no one really seemed to like to watch.

Well, from what I've read about the full animation studios, you had to prove your stuff as a cleanup artist before you could get into doing animation. It wasn't a matter of separating the good animators from the good illustrators- they were all good illustrators, and then they expected it to take another ten years to learn the animation part of it....the new kids got to do the part that was mostly just illustration (cleaning up and doing polished linework on the animation the senior artists had done)

Most of those studios just want to see your life drawing and illustration portfolio, and if you're good enough at that, will eventually move you into animating, from what I understand.

reference from life a lot, even if it's not your thing, it helps so much. think of it as hard training!

keep a collection of references! like pictures and stuff. Look at them often!

I feel your pain. I often wish I was good at drawing instead of writing because it's easy to get recognition as a visual artist. Platitudes about everyone having special gifts don't seem to do much good in these moments, so here's a pat on the back for you. Just keep working at it! At least you won't get worse

Compared to the normal front page of FA... I'd say you're doing just fine.

I've noticed that all the good artists are the ones that seem to talk about how horrible their art is or how they wish it was better (heck, I almost wish I was half as good as some of the artists on my watch list).

Just make sure you're enjoying yourself and that's all that matters. :)

Self-critique is part of improving, yeah.

I just feel like I somehow missed / am missing something. :P
