Arrogant and afraid
We built this monument to ourselves
Sacred and profane
Our purpose is divine and unquestioned
Awestruck and ashamed
Fig leaves hide the source of blame

Neurosis, universally ordained
This fire will burn for years to come
Our mortality betrayed
The curtain tears, the lightning blinds
And every word contrived still lies

A burning bush, a forest fire
Is why we live and why we die
This understanding, truly feigned
Drowning in despond and mire

And what was once believed
Will quickly fade away
Monuments crumble under time’s dull relentless blade

The answers that were found
They sang the sweetest sound
In desperation, quickly swallowed
Heaven-sent, earth-bound
