Opencanvas 2 Artist Collaboration Sketch Commissions
14 years ago
This is just an idea that popped into my head for a form of commissions that could be taken.
The idea is thus:
I've seen some people do sketch pages where you pay by the hour for someone to draw whatever for you. Since I'm not confident in my speed to do something like that, I was considering something along the lines of this:
- A 3000x3000 OC canvas with 2 artists collaborating and sketching ideas that the commissioner provides. This can be done while livestreaming.
- The page would consist of different degrees of quality work. There would be 1 better quality sketch from both artists (possibly with light color or shading), 2 medium quality sketches, and the rest of the page would be filled with misc doodles and random do-dads. I don't have a sample of what would consist of "better, medium, and doodles", but if the idea sounds interesting enough I may put together something to measure by.
- The artists either work until the page is full, or the commissioner runs out of ideas.
- The ideas given to the artists would be pretty vague (Eg: 2 specific characters kissing) and the rest would be up to the artists (with maybe a few smaller details added in to make it interesting for them to draw).
My question is, I suppose, is how much would you pay for something like this? I'm aware it probably depends on who the artists are, but just say.. base your estimate on if it were a page of doodles from me.
Cheers!

Sounds like an interesting idea! The only problem I could foresee would be fussy commissioners, so you'd have to have a big-arse disclaimer stating "Random stuff is random. No moaning/whining/bitching, okay?" or something to that effect. :x

As done by one-two artists, depending on what you'd class as a more detailed sketch or a doodle... I think about $40-50 is reasonable, but it really does depend. People -will- ask for examples of course.
That's just me, though. c:
Are we talking the same sort of quality as the OC sketches in your scraps or something better?
Sorry for not giving a number, but I think you should set prices you're comfortable with rather than what we say. If they're too low, you'll get a flood of customers, and if they're too high, you'll get no customers. Just find something inbetween!
As for a price, I know purplekecleon did hourly session for 35 USD, so theoretically if it's two people then it would be around 35 each, so I think 60-70 in total would be correct.
.....crap I should have gone lower so I can get one....40-50? j/k
I've seen similar before, some artists do a 'sketchpad', where you toss up half a dozen ideas, and they sketch em all onto a single A4 sheet of paper. They seem to average out at around $30.
I don't know what 3k/3k scales up as, but I'd suggest modifying the price accordingly; an A4 sheet appears to allow a maximum of 8 well drawn (semi-detailed) sketches, so scale your price based on however many sketches you can fit on.
Also maybe separate the OC commishes into three sections with different prices. The most expensive, at maybe $90, lets the commissioneer basically dictate what they want. at $60, your initial idea, they make rough suggestions and let you two take control. And add a final option at maybe $30, where the commissioneer gives a topic, and a handful of characters (I.e Sue, Joe and a generic fox, with dancing and drinking) and you and the other artist do whatever comes to mind to fill up the page, near total artistic freedom?
I think i would charge at least normal rate, 1hour = 20$ per artist. otherwise about $60-$80.
