Moo!
Written and rewritten over the years. My dragons have changed alot, altering to change with my ideas.. this is the latest iteration of them.
-edit 7/28/13- rewritten again.
My dragon species is quite curious.
Sexuality:
A heat every roughly 200 days starting shortly after puberty around age 25. They can reproduce asexually or with another. They however cannot reproduce unless they are in heat. A pre-mature heat can be induced through penetrative stimulation that lasts more than six hours, even to a pre-pubescent Evause.
During a heat (induced or otherwise) if sexual release is achieved through deep penetration (stimulating specific nerves below the egg pouch.) She will fertilize by releasing a flood of hemi-ova in to her egg pouch. Her gametes do not require a second partner, they will self fertilize and grow in to eggs. However if a "male" releases in to her, roughly a third of her gametes will merge with the "male's", another third will be purely hers, and the last third will be purely "his". Giving a mix of children. If she however does not achieve release, the children will be purely "his".
Another rather devious feature about them. The species does not thrust during sex. Any form of penetration in to their cloaca will trigger muscles inside to 'swallow' the intrusion. If it so happens to be a penis, that penis will end up suckled until they pull free or the muscles grow too weak to grip any longer. Evause Dragons do not tend to mate particularly long, five minutes at most, going beyond that limit tends to leave the dragon in cramping pain, with stomach muscles overworked and exhausted. It can be even worse for immature Evause Dragons
With practice an Evause may even learn to modulate, ripple, and even reverse the movement of her muscles, allowing rather interesting bedtime experiences. And with experience they can go for longer and longer periods, though it is not a comfortable form of practice.
As explained, an evause becomes mature around age 35 and is considered an adult at 37. About age 20 they become mature enough to have a heat induced and around 25 or so it begins naturally once or twice a year. However it isn't until around age 50 that they become fully sexual, around that age puberty ends and the "male" genitalia are fully formed, allowing them to deposit hemi-ova in to some one else. The lifespan of an Evause Dragon is limitless, without illness or injury one can live to be thousands of years old. However they continue to grow, albeit at a slow rate endlessly. Some become so large they are incapable of walking upright and take a more quadruped form.
Other notable facts:
Their vascular system is distributed, each segment of vein consists of one way valves and a band of muscle half way between. There are very few major veins but notably there are two in the neck one leading to the primary lungs and a fourth leading down to the digestive and reproductive track. Yet even if one of these are damaged, they will not bleed for long, the one way valves will shut and no more blood will flow until it is fixed. Damaging a major vein may cause other issues due to a lack of blood flow, but not enough to kill.
Though they breathe air like most mammals, with a slightly simpler bronchial system, this is not their primary method of oxygen exchange. Due to the slow distirubted nature of their blood, extremities would be oxygen starved. This is not the case due to the fact that they can also exchange oxygen through their skin. Though they are mostly covered in scales, between each is a fine vein of skin that is thin enough to allow breathing. This also allows them to take oxygen in underwater as well. It also means that even if they are strangled, it may take a much longer time for them to lose consciousness, due to being able to breathe through the skin on their head and face.
Evause dragons are blueish in color due to the color of their blood. Oxygen rich blood is bright blue, almost turquoise and very watery, less oxygen rich blood becomes dark blue, even black and as thick as molasas. When an evause dragon blushes, their features tend to darken and tint blue instead of pink.
