My opinion on two random handgun and rifle cartridges.

.380 - Kicks like a bitch because .380 guns are really fucking small and lightweight, and usually don't have enough of a handle to facilitate four-finger grip (except in the case of Glocks, which redirect the energy of the blast through your arms and body rather than up through the top of the gun, resulting in a strange vibrating feeling but not a lot of recoil).
Weapons used tonight: Sig Saur .380 and Glock 21.
.45 - Pure unadulturated joy to hold and fire, with next to no recoil and solid stopping power that .380 can't really hope to match. Also a lot deeper sounding (if not overtly louder) than .380s, which feels a lot more comfortable.
Weapons used tonight: M1911A1, Colt .45 (not sure which model it was).

.223 - Next to no recoil and a very light if crisp ptat! sound, which while at first uncomfortable your ears will eventually warm up to. Very lightweight feeling as well when in rapid-fire because the heavy rifle tends to push backwards into the crook of your arm rather than up. Only problem I'd had with .223 was honestly with the fact that it has literally no stopping or knock-down power, as its high velocity and small diameter mean it tends to pass straight through a target.
Weapons used tonight: M4A1 Military Sporter/Carbine (NOT an assault weapon).
.270 - This is a beast to behold. While the actual bullet itself isn't much wider than a .22 or .223, it has enough propellant behind it to send it screeching downrange and into the target with a force that they won't soon forget. It also tends to climb really fucking high if you're a crazy enough bastard/bitch to use anything besides bolt-action rifles. Speaking of which, the bolt on a .270 rifle is about four inches long. And it locks in place. Your shoulder will thank you later if you invest in a recoil pad.
Weapons used tonight: Some old-ass Remington rifle (again of uncertain make, but it was really fucking heavy).
