Failing HD, increasing NTFS corrupt. ;_;

...Great... Now I have no choice but to avoid using my computer asap, as i'm getting more frequent corruption errors and starting to lose even more files. Microsoft's NTFS file system is so horrible, the piece of crap doesn't even try to recover data. (sorry for cursing, but I just lost a few more files tonight) >_<
My only current plan is i'm now forced to seek an external hard disk drive that is compatible with this old com (one of those 500GB would be nice) to backup whatever I can, so when it does crash it'll hopefully only be the operating system.
As much as i'd love to get a new com they aren't cheap and i simply don't have the info on the new tech nor any money for it, replacing the HD's impossible as most/all are now SATA only. (mine's a 40GB IDE)
If there seems to be no life on this page or DA's then you'll know why.
Did finish one sketch for
mercury-chan though, so may see if I can tidy it up (hard when there's only 8bit gimp to work with) and upload it.

For basic computer functionality, many linux live CD redistributables will get you up and running with the internet without ever having to touch your hard drive. From there you could use NTFS-3g to try and get the files off the old-fashioned way, or attempt to make an image of your drive to examine it later on your new external using ddrescue and scalpel.
Tried to replace it with another IDE drive as a temporary option but it seems those newer disks need much more amps to run, so that temporary plan was ruled out. ^^;
To make matters worse the CD-Drive doesn't work either due to a cheap and nasty microATX, preventing any use of a live CD. (wow, I really did horribly when buying that old PC didn't I? XD )
My current plan at this stage is a whole new PC, upon i'll do the transfer once it's up and running. Which explains why it's been taking so long to save up enough for it.
Also so very sorry for the overdue reply, was only very recently that I could read your helpful comment. ^^
Alternatively, if you can't get a HD, you can also send file to yourself by email
and then, when the problem is corrected, get those file back from hotmail and stuff like that.
Anyway, good luck. ^^
*hug*
Many thanks for the comment, i'm also so sorry for the overdue reply as it's been only recently I've been able to read your comment. ^^;
I recently got a 500GB SATA for $110, and they had both IED and SATA drives in stock.

Just checking out the web site can give you a few deals too. I have had good luck with WesternDigital and Seagate HDs in the past.
Those externals would work out short-term, but of course in the long-term the master HD is still doomed to fail, and as such due to the power disease (my journal explains the reasons) warrants a whole new PC. ^^
Many thanks for your kind help. ^-^ And very sorry for the late reply, as it's only recently I've been able to read your comment. ^^;
One broke on me recently, so I feel your pain. Luckily I was able to haul the fs onto something else using GNU ddrescue (powerful, accessible from Ubuntu livecds and suchlike) and fix it there. External USB disk caddies and hotpluggable SATA kit are your friends here.
Wish my CD would work so I could do something like that, but then they don't make compatible microATX's with 20pins anymore do they?
Of course I think i've learnt my lesson with a main priority is to acquire at least 3 HD's for the new PC. One as the main, one as a backup and the third as a second unused backup for the main. ^_^
Many thanks for the helpful comment, and sorry for my late reply as it's only just recently i've been able to read your comment. ^^
