I agree with madamglacia
I just got back from Atlanta yesterday, actually, and went through SCAD there. It was my first time in atl and I really did not enjoy it (minus a few touristy-attractions). Honestly--I didn't feel safe.
Now Savannah itself is just AMAZING, I love the atmosphere there. Savannah'd be my choice!
If you like busy cities you should check out all the art schools in New York City. The courses are around the same price and rent isn't too bad if you mind riding the train and having roommates. It's still cheaper and gives you more space than dorming. And there are soooo many museums!
Check out some of the summer programs like the one and The School of Visual Arts first to see if it's worth it ;D it's a lot easier starting an art career in NYC or LA, especially cartooning. The contacts and internships you get are awesome!
I went to the Savannah one but now have to go to ATL. It depends on what major you're looking into... For instance, they have one of the premier print makers over at the ATL campus, but if you're into animation, they have everything in Savannah, despite the fact that ATL took a lot of the professors from Savannah.
Savannah is also dangerous... and has less going on because unlike Atlanta, it's not really a full blown city. So in the end it just depends on which you prefer and which has what you need.
If you are talking to me: I was going to the Savannah campus and will be attending the ATL campus for summer. I have two freakin' classes and then I can blow the joint and pay back student loans for the rest of my life.
yeah, i withdrew cuz my brain was exploding from the stress and because i'm super poor. atl is really my only option cuz friends have offered to put me up for free. *fist pump*
My friend Brian ended up letting me hop out, pick up stuff at the art supply store (showed two folks how to use Prisma Markers there), and did loops around for a bit until I was ready to leave. We gave up trying to find parking after about a half hr.
SCAD ATL is placed in a good area of town, easy walking distance to nearby shops (Target, Publix, Kroger, Theater, et cetera). Living at the Spring House dorms, eh... it's livable >.> One of the freshman has been pulling the fire alarm at 3am in the morning, so I've been told. I'm just thinking it's the quarterly fire drill, but the firefighters come to the dorm, so I dunno. There's been an exponential rise in vandalism in Spring House; freshman are writing on the elevators and STANDING OUTSIDE MY DOOR SMOKING AND SCREAMING >8C plus the constant ambulances and firetrucks.
I still love Spring House :3 They just need to renovate it.
Now on to the food. Many people are complaining about the food here. Most say it's bad, but there are a few days that the chefs make something really awesome.
Classes are awesome. I love it :3 General education classes usually has around 25 students while the major classes are less than 10. It really feels like you're being taught personally in the major classes.
I've only went through Savannah and never spent time there, so I can't really say what the crime is like, so I go by the statistics :p I like Atlanta because there's cameras everywhere and lots of cops XD
lol, yeah man. I don't really remember what atlanta's like at night, but most cities I feel better in because there are people around at all hours. In savannah you'll be completely alone and then some dude will like pop outta nowhere!
I don't really have a choice in the matter this time around, but I figure if you're gunna spend a ton of money on tuition to go to scad it doesn't really matter which campus. I think it just boils down to preference and convenience.
That sounds.. adventurous ._. I wonder if there's any burn marks still? =p Which room is it under? X3
And oh man, the internet x.x That shit suuucks, although lately, I've been getting random download speeds of 2MBps when I'm downloading MLP >w>
I love Spring House :3 It's so flawed that it's really cool. The security sucks, the back gate is always broken, and people to always hang out with :p My room is falling apart though >.> The drywall in the bathroom is rotting, so all the tiles are falling off. Yay duct tape!
Breakfast needs better grits. It tastes like chunky water XP
I'm a sophomore in ITGM c: Are you currently going to SCAD ATL? 'cause I made a facebook group for SCAD ATL Furs :o There's about 8 or 9 here o3o
I'm sure it all depends on what you're majoring in. But I personally liked Savannah. I grew up in a small town- actually it wasn't a town at all as much as the middle of nowhere, so a smaller city like Savannah appealed to me more than Atlanta. Also, I often walked to and from classes when I went to SCAD and I personally really loved the city and how spread out everything was. Of course Savannah could be dangerous, but it's always a good idea to be aware of your surroundings and use good common sense.
I'm sure that whatever you choose, you'll do fine.
Wish I could give you some useful advice but I graduated SCAD before there was an Atlanta campus (1997) and I don't know the relative merits between the two. I do know that my old animation instructor is still there however and she says that they've got a number of the Disney animators who used to work in the Florida studio now helping out the animation major curriculum, and that's a Big Deal. If you want I can put you in touch with her.
I like both Atlanta and Savannah, but Atlanta is a major city and I would presume higher living expenses associated with it. Savannah is still relatively small city and the downtown area is easily walkable which should help you save money on cars and gas.
I'm curious here myself. If I was thinking about going there, what would they be looking for in a portfolio? Should I be creative or just show them the basics (life drawings, etc.)
Scad doesn't even require a portfolio so any work you can put in is a good thing. Anything that shows you draw from life or whatever it is you do. (Any proof that that you have promise). Then, if they like what they see, they often give ya a scholarship.
yeah, Sound Design :P. It was gorgeous there. I think you'll like it if you go, just, seriously, it's really expensive. You're better off going to community college to get all the bullshit out of the way first then transferring later.
go somewhere that does. a semester long class at community college is $100-400. a quarter long class at scad costs $3,390 or $169.50 each day of class. SCAD's estimated cost of attendance is $63,348.00. Harvard's estimated cost of attendance? $53,950. scad is not the harvard of art schools. certain commercial fields it is up there in the quality but all of the "Art" majors are seriously lacking compared to other schools.
on the bright side though-
the high costs are offset by an amazing scholarship program that brings down the cost to a more reasonable level (assuming you keep your scholarship, they have grade requirements that you have to maintain to keep it and most people i knew lost theres within a year.)
scad actively caters to furries advertising on places like iscribble.net
your drawings skills will mean you will definitely get a scholarship and the education you get there will be valuable.
although the quality of many of the students work there is terrible the professors know what there doing and genuinely want to help.
things you should be aware of
it is a terribly repressed and conservative school. i am surprised they have nude live models. this is not to say you cant do weird stuff, but it is discouraged and pretty much no one else does
also worth noting, savannah, no music culture. atlanta is a major city so there is more going on there
high points of the savannah civic center
regina spector before she was famous
Seinfeld
reo speed wagon
parliament (they cancled)
these are literally the only major entertainers i can think of that went there in the last 3 years
they do have a wicked gun show though
lol, didn't say it to make ya feel bad, we're gunna make it through this.
and yeah, my boyfriend did community college before hand, saved him a ton of money and some of the work he did there ended up really filling out his portfolio nicely. he ended up getting the biggest scholarship i had heard of around campus (i'm sure there are bigger, but maybe i just hadn't met the right people).
which bring to mind, "does scad ever give full scholarships to anyone?"
Here's an important point about scad in general (all campuses). Paula Wallace is like the highest paid college president ever... So yes, you get perks like swimming pools and all, but she also gets fuckin' paaaaaaaaaaaaaaid. While I was there Equestrian Studies became a minor (maybe a major...or maybe there was just talk I can't remember) and they built a million dollar stable...with giant flat screen TVs in it...
I'm just groaning at a bunch of people commenting on here that didnt even go to the college.
Plus, I live in Atlanta now, an Savannah is a beautiful place to be. It's AFTER your graduate that you'll see there is NOT alot there for you career wise, but for college, amazing.
In the 5 years I was in Savannah, the 4 at college, the 1 after, I never ONCE ran into any crime situations.
There are stories, yes, but if you're smart and know where to go and dont go like, down into bad areas in the ghettoish places (which is abit of wa walk from the dorms) then you'll be fine.
A car was broken into in my driveway, I knew people who had guns pointed at them, cars stolen, break ins (one person I know had their xBox stolen out of his apartment), kids were held at gunpoint in the Dyson dorms; the security guards are kinda lax. People have tested them by holding up different items while driving past the kiosk instead of their IDs, one person I know held up a shot gun shell and was waved through...
Oh yeah, some guy was stabbed in the film department parking lot and now that building no longer has midnight house because of this.
Over at Montgomery (animation building) someone was pistol whipped and had their bike stolen. They were in the hospital for days and ended up with a swollen face and a broken arm. School tried to cover it up and regularly tries to cover these sorts of things up.
A friend of mine was chased on her scooter.
Another friend of mine was about to be robbed, but avoided the situation by flashing a knife that he carried. The same guy had his bike stolen out of a pile of bikes and it didn't even have a seat.
I have heard people say that their bikes have been stolen from balconies.
My TV and other items were stolen out of a moving van I was sharing with my roommate. Some of her stuff went missing too.
The panhandlers are vicious! They bother the shit out of everyone. One guy I know was asked for money and when he said he didn't have any, the guy asked him to go to an atm and get him some. When he said, "No." The guy said, "I'll remember your face."
If you look at all "unique" or "odd" you're going to get shit from the locals. Someone once nearly had a heart attack when they saw me in my goth gear. "Oh Lord, Oh Lord Jesus, help me, help me Jesus, etc." But perhaps you're familiar with this.
SOUNDS LIKE ANOTHER SUNNY DAY IN LOVELY OL' GEORGIA
actually, sounds like my downtown. dad doesn't like us going too far over there, the further you go.
though. it's odd. downtown looks run down. but it has this very refined and artsy air to it. the people at the cafes, the bookstores art galleries. I felt like a meek child and bum clothes
Ah, ok. I haven't been there yet myself (I've only been in the area a little bit and never to the SCAD campus), but the friends who are putting me up for my last two classes are much happier there. We all met in Savannah, they graduated, I didn't. *punches self in face* but they both have jobs in the industry. Now one of them will be doing the grad program in Atlanta. At any rate, their opinion of Atlanta is all I have to go on, but I guess I'll have first hand experience come June.
I would always pass by it on my way to AWA (Anime Weekend Atlanta) which is held at the Cobb Galleria.
the area surrounding Cobb and Cobb itself. I find them gorgeous
I actually didn't really know furries (other than what CSI portrayed) or conventions of any kind (other than Trekkie) existed until I went to SCAD. I was schoooooled. So yeah, now I know all about FWA, AWA, DragonCon and what have you. Haven't been myself, just went to my first con that wasn't strictly art based this month. ComicCon decided to branch out and have a smaller con here in San Francisco called...uh... WonderCo? So I finally got to see what that's all about. I'm hella sheltered. lol.
http://spotcrime.com/ga/savannah
if you compair this to a similar map in a major city it wont look that bad. the reason why that comparison would be off though is because in savannah the scad students are the ones most likely to be targeted
I went to that school! I graduated last year!! Loved it! The savannah campus is way better because u get more options to what u want to study :) if u want to know more, just ask!!
You'll wanna hit Savannah because I believe that has the full program. I mean both pretty much have the same standards and are pretty heavily foundational base. My only problem with Savannah is the lack of application practice, but I suppose that's learned over time.
But yeah for the most part I'd recommend Savannah, Atlanta would be nice to have you here so I can poke you every now and again, but you has a future to develop!!
xD Haha I'd be the happiest if Thorn decides to come to CA. The schools here are expensive though, (but I'm sure there are some good programs at a fair price) D: Also Rose I've heard good things about SCAD, and I really think it's a good idea to look through all the options, it ultimately come down to choosing what works best for you mans!
i saw work coming out of the city college of san francisco that was comparable to scad and you could live on the marina for the difference in cost between that and scad
I think scad's way more expensive than the schools here in CA. I went to the Academy of Art for a while too (scad for longer). And for one, the Academy gave me a scholarship that covered half my tuition and their foundations department is leaps and bounds better than scad's.
We want Thorn in CA! Buy hey, you have to do what's best for yourself! Just make sure you investigate all your options thoroughly before making a decision.
If you do later on decide to go to college in the bay area you have plenty of friends here willing to help you out or rent rooms with you~
I used to live in Savannah.
Its a pretty place n everything but EVERYTHING closes super early.
And its always feeling gross n humid there, lots of bugs, lots of odd-smells...
I live in Atlanta now, and i LOVE it here.
Lots to do. Lots of people to meet. Lots of opportunity.
i couldn't disagree more. i actively worked at making friends there and didn't have much luck at all, whereas at community college (a place ironically where people dont hang around) i made tons of good friends who i still talk to.
I went to SCAD Savannah... and I have a lot of mixed feelings. I wouldn't trade my time there for the world, but there are a lot of things I didn't like as well.
The city itself is gorgeous and full of history. I absolutely loved living there for the aesthetics but it's one crime ridden city. My roommate was held up by gun point in our driveway, my car was smashed into at my apartment complex, my other roommate's car was broken into twice and I have a handful of friends who were mugged. >_>;; I know this could happen in a big city too... but it was kind of nuts how much shit went down in Savannah.
As for the school itself I learned A LOT. Most of the professors are excellent and have experience from the industry. The resources are fabulous as well. You'll have a lot at your disposal. I've never been to the Atlanta campus myself, so I can't say anything about it, cause I just don't know. If I were you I'd do a visit of both campuses to see which you like better... cause you'll be putting A LOT of money into this school. So be prepared. And as for a job afterwords... good luck. -_-;;
Any more questions feel free to note me! :3
I think the crime has to do with the fact that SCAD really is the reason why Savannah has a notable economy at all. I think that the people committing the crimes were under the impression that scad students have money, which some of us do (thanks to mommy and daddy) but I'm poor as hell so I'm glad no one tried to rob me, I wouldn't have had a penny to give 'em, lol.
That reminds me of another person I heard about who was going to be robbed, only had two dollars on him, the robber just said, "keep it." and ran off.
probably worth noting the poverty rate is incredibly high there. something like 10% of the city is below %50 of the poverty line, and the government established poverty line is not really enough money to live on anyway.
this is exactly why i did not get a job there, its not worth it. better to focus on school and excel and pay it off somewhere where the wages are decent.
Savannah. Granted, you don't get the perks of a giant city where everything you can imagine is walking distance. On the other hand, Atlanta can be dangerous. And driving around there is a pain. Savannah is also a pretty lil' city. :) Although Atlanta does have the perk of being the site of many cons, so you would save on gas and hotel costs that way.
I have friends from both and really if you want a better school you should go to atlanta.
Better faculty, has its shit together. Savannah branch has a lot of problems right now apparently.
I would start going around and asking the students themselves, you aren't going to get much information on FA. Yeah choosing a good location is important- but having the right people teach you is even more so.
Well, consider your costs. How much is tuition, how much will room and board be in each area, food costs, moving costs, availability of employment in the area and so on (after all having a gig to help with expenses is a good idea).
Now, Another factor you might consider is what sort of a social network you have in that area, on top of that, which businesses are in the area that could offer you the potential to work or intern if not specifically in your field of study in something that is related to it.
No matter what you do do what you feel is the best fit for you.
This brings something interesting to my mind: in atlanta you my be offered an internship that you could be doing while in school, there aren't really any people looking for art interns in savannah.
No experience with the actual school per se, but I prefer Savannah as a city. It's gorgeous. Atlanta's just kinda gross in comparison.
The biggest thing you should be concerned about is the costs, honestly. Tuition, rent, food, job availability, etc. Doesn't matter how good the school is if you get to the point where you're really struggling to pay for it. I'm not sure about your financial situation but I know very few people that make it 4-5 years through a relatively expensive private college like SCAD without having to work/take out a loan/both
Ehh uhh that's a tough choice. Savannah is the better school for most majors, but Savannah can be just as dangerous as Atlanta too. Actually, I lived there for a month, fully planning on attending school there. But it got too expensive. And while I was there my boyfriend at the time's friend got beaten severely and robbed while riding his bike to class in the evening (not even late night), he was hospitalized. He ended up transferring to Atlanta because they did not catch the people who did it and he was terrified of them finding him and killing him. The tension between the locals and the students there is also very high, people get verbally threatened and things thrown through their car windows while driving if they see that you are a student. The cost of living is very very high as well, and the quality is very low. I don't know much about the Atlanta campus but Atlanta itself is also a very dangerous city and while I was there for Dragon*Con a few people got mugged in broad daylight. Just keep these things in mind ... there are good schools in other cities that have a better quality of life.
Depends on your major really. But in general, ATL doesn't have nearly the kind of stuff Savannah has.
SCAD is a little lol though, if you can get into a better/cheaper school, I'd say go for it.
I have an Atlantian in my year in England at the AUCB, she does not recommend SCAD and had a much cheaper time going to the AUCB, even with flight fees.
Saying that, I have an old friend who did the Savannah campus and seemed to have a good time - but you really have to make the most of it yourself and push for what you want out of it, as is the case with any course these days.
I have heard that the Atlanta campus is not as good as Savannah.
As well, I'm not sure about Savannah, but keep in mind that Atlanta, things are expensive.
Lol, it's Fulton County, and the Buckhead neighborhood. ...and if you're not in the dorms you can easily MARTA from cheaper and perfectly safe neighborhoods around Grant Park/Edgewood/Inman Park/etc. All the artsy people and shit to do is in East Atlanta Village/Little Five/Decatur, anyways.
The area around west Atlanta towards Bankhead is the only part that is really scary, but SCAD is NOWHERE NEAR any of that. Even the stuff in the south around College Park and stuff near the airport isn't as bad as some people make it out to be, there's as much crime in the prissy white people apartments as there is there, which isn't much anyways.
on a side note if you want to stay fairly close to GA ringling is over in florida and they are at least as good as scad if not better. i think they have the same cultural issues as savannah though
there are several furs on here from there and there work is solid
(i cant remember who because they have changed there icons and i am lazy)
I think all places are going to have their problems here and there, and that it's kind of unavoidable depending people.
I just checked out ringling again (haven't done that in a while) and wow. tuition is much cheaper there. I think I get a bit jumpy when I saw "$16k" for full-time student
it may also be worth noting that scad has some accreditation issues you may want to look into. its kind of irrelevant if you get a killer portfolio out of the school, but its just another thing on the long list of mixed feelings i have about the school.
I've never known anyone who has gone there who's ever graduated from there. when they tried to transfer they had a whole slew of issues with credits and accreditation. they also treat you well for the first year and forget about you the second.
it is an awful place with really good advertising. there are a lot of much better schools that are far cheaper and treat you better.
what do you plan to major in?
(also, sorry I have a major grudge against scad. They've fucked over every person who I knew went there. shit sucks)
honestly? you could easily accomplish the same thing with self-directed education. there are online workshops, very good books, and online messages boards where you can get critique and help. the resources are there, you just need to reach out and find them.
the thing that will help you out the most though is life drawing. look it up online, look for books, see if there are any studio workshops or hell even try and get some people together to draw each other.
it is entirely feasible to teach yourself this stuff with no or very little college. I'm doing it for myself right now, and I am on the same level as my peers who are currently in college.
if your going for illustration ringling is a solid school thats close. for animation you should probably try for cal arts with your style of drawing. cal arts is really hard to get into but thats because its the best. go look at peoples work on youtube from sophomore and junior year there and there as good as many peoples senior films elsewhere
those are two of the strongest departments at scad but i still advise going elsewhere even though i have had friends who got solid jobs from there schooling there.
oh so i remembered another scad story i heard from totobo . when trying to get paperwork from one of there officies they were told "its too hot to get your paperwork" the office was open this was a paid profesional who said this in an air conditioned office.
http://censoredbyscad.blogspot.com/ this is that conservative tone i was mentioning. its rare to see any documentation of disent because scad uses its legal arm to quickly suppress any negative dissent.
If you go to the Savannah campus, and take sequential art you'll have the chance to learn under Brian Ralph and Mark Schultz! Like, two of my favorite dudes right there. Wish I was still around to learn under them folks.
ATLANTA, I go to GSU, it's like four train stations away from the SCAD building- you can visit me!
Or go to UGA instead, all the art professors I met there are awesome, most people I know who graduated from the design school have jobs. It's a thousand times better than SCAD and you get exposed to SO much more. Athens is a hipstery desert of indie bands and beer pong slathered in class and white privilege denial, but you see that in Savannah in a more yuppie and less fraternity boy culture way... and it's just SO much cheaper.
Or if you can swing it, go to a school in LA or NYC where you can actually get good contacts, and get exposed to more art and theory stuff. (Savannah doesn't have contemporary art galleries, design firms, animation studios, or even a notable graffiti or zine culture lol.)

to be fair though, I lived in NYC, and lots of people hate that
But yeah for the most part I'd recommend Savannah, Atlanta would be nice to have you here so I can poke you every now and again, but you has a future to develop!!
But you should do what's going to be best for you... don't just move somewhere because of us. Even if we are awesome.
If you do later on decide to go to college in the bay area you have plenty of friends here willing to help you out or rent rooms with you~
Its a pretty place n everything but EVERYTHING closes super early.
And its always feeling gross n humid there, lots of bugs, lots of odd-smells...
I live in Atlanta now, and i LOVE it here.
Lots to do. Lots of people to meet. Lots of opportunity.
we are so cool :>
The city itself is gorgeous and full of history. I absolutely loved living there for the aesthetics but it's one crime ridden city. My roommate was held up by gun point in our driveway, my car was smashed into at my apartment complex, my other roommate's car was broken into twice and I have a handful of friends who were mugged. >_>;; I know this could happen in a big city too... but it was kind of nuts how much shit went down in Savannah.
As for the school itself I learned A LOT. Most of the professors are excellent and have experience from the industry. The resources are fabulous as well. You'll have a lot at your disposal. I've never been to the Atlanta campus myself, so I can't say anything about it, cause I just don't know. If I were you I'd do a visit of both campuses to see which you like better... cause you'll be putting A LOT of money into this school. So be prepared. And as for a job afterwords... good luck. -_-;;
Any more questions feel free to note me! :3
That reminds me of another person I heard about who was going to be robbed, only had two dollars on him, the robber just said, "keep it." and ran off.
GA's is $4.50/$5
Better faculty, has its shit together. Savannah branch has a lot of problems right now apparently.
I would start going around and asking the students themselves, you aren't going to get much information on FA. Yeah choosing a good location is important- but having the right people teach you is even more so.
Now, Another factor you might consider is what sort of a social network you have in that area, on top of that, which businesses are in the area that could offer you the potential to work or intern if not specifically in your field of study in something that is related to it.
No matter what you do do what you feel is the best fit for you.
The biggest thing you should be concerned about is the costs, honestly. Tuition, rent, food, job availability, etc. Doesn't matter how good the school is if you get to the point where you're really struggling to pay for it. I'm not sure about your financial situation but I know very few people that make it 4-5 years through a relatively expensive private college like SCAD without having to work/take out a loan/both
Good luck
SCAD is a little lol though, if you can get into a better/cheaper school, I'd say go for it.
Saying that, I have an old friend who did the Savannah campus and seemed to have a good time - but you really have to make the most of it yourself and push for what you want out of it, as is the case with any course these days.
As well, I'm not sure about Savannah, but keep in mind that Atlanta, things are expensive.
We should go to Savannah together, FFF YES
it's over near Cobb, isn't it? I love Cobb
anything on animation at atl?
The area around west Atlanta towards Bankhead is the only part that is really scary, but SCAD is NOWHERE NEAR any of that. Even the stuff in the south around College Park and stuff near the airport isn't as bad as some people make it out to be, there's as much crime in the prissy white people apartments as there is there, which isn't much anyways.
there are several furs on here from there and there work is solid
(i cant remember who because they have changed there icons and i am lazy)
I just checked out ringling again (haven't done that in a while) and wow. tuition is much cheaper there. I think I get a bit jumpy when I saw "$16k" for full-time student
They've fucked over every person who I knew went there. shit sucks)
the thing that will help you out the most though is life drawing. look it up online, look for books, see if there are any studio workshops or hell even try and get some people together to draw each other.
it is entirely feasible to teach yourself this stuff with no or very little college. I'm doing it for myself right now, and I am on the same level as my peers who are currently in college.
watchu neeeed
those are two of the strongest departments at scad but i still advise going elsewhere even though i have had friends who got solid jobs from there schooling there.
