Not so easy if the virus has gotten into your system! We recently ran into the "Win 7 Security 2011" problem with Leon's computer, and it got so far into the system files that it wouldn't allow you to install any new software.. Especially antivirus or anti-malware programs!

They can be quite nasty. We had to reformat his drive :x

Happened to me. Bugs are going all over the internet lately.

For situations like that it's possible to get around it using an EXE or BAT file made to kill the virus's process while you're in Safe Mode so you can install stuff.
It also sometimes requires some registry know-how, but usually if you have another comp handy or can go to a friend's, you can search on Google for "*nameofvirus* removal guide" for steps, especially with fake security stuff, those tend to be well documented.

We actually tried working with the registries, and there was just so much of it that it wasn't worth the work vs reformat.

As odd as it would seem trusting microsoft with system security, security essentials works amazing. Pair that up with spywareblaster and spybot s&d and youll have no problems.

Malwarebytes is good.

What I found with earlier versions of the 'Win 7 Security 2011' virus is, if you're fast enough, you can use system restore and go back to an earlier point (usually about five days - a week); while the virus is still present on your system but in an 'inactive' state of sorts, a scan with Malwarebytes will pick it up and eradicate it. I don't know if I just got lucky or it's a method that will always work, but it worked twice for me on my old machine.

I know you're strapped for cash right now, Sarcadonk, but investment in a 'Work Computer' might be a good idea.
It doesn't have to be big or fast, but you can get some seriously good hardware for a low cost these days. The kind of price that would've been thousands 4 years ago. It won't play games, but it'll draw stuff no problem.

Yeah I'm seriously considering it for the next thing I do.

This virus is wicked... I was browsing stuff, and then, it said "Critical drive error - Windows cannot find drive space". Then, desktop background poofed. Then, started losing desktop icons... Windows explorer wouldn't reload on start up, Task Manager has been locked out. It says task manager was locked by the computer admin... There isn't one. Soooo, yeah. Scary.
