I've been diddling with the less-glamorous aspects of the story, tweaking the formatting and font, trying to get a better print version. I needed that so I could proofread the beast.

So, today, while I cooled my heels for a few hours at Opal's doll meeting, I made it all the way through the front matter, the entirety of Marian's origin, and into the second "road" chapter. Surprisingly, I didn't find all that much to hack out of the first bit. It really holds together pretty well after all these years. I definitely need to get the transitional chapter written soon, or the later parts won't "work" with the start. There will be some continuity challenges regardless, but I think I can hack it together. With a little luck I can get the primary proof finished and uploaded this week. Then I need to move on to some old business that's waited far too long already.
