I saw "Reverend" Fred Phelps on the news again last night. His "church" seems to have been dealt a bit of a blow by the courts who amazingly seemed to think he and his followers were somehow out of line for picketing the funeral of a soldier killed in Iraq. Appearently the family wasn't consolled by his insistance that their beloved son and brother and husband was "going to Hell" for fighting in support of a country that allows the existance of homosexuals. The court inexplicably decided that picketing the funeral of the soldier was "inflicting cruelty" and underlined the decision by awarding the family 13 million dollars in damages.
Of course, I'd like to know where these "pliant" judges were when this scumbag was picketing AIDs funerals.
I'm not a particularly vindictive person. I believe that most people have good in them and that given the opportunity that good will win out. BUT, there are a few people in this world who seem to exist for no other reason than to spread hate, fear, needless cruelty and (in Fred's case) outright stupidity to everyone they touch. Osama bin Laden is one of these. Charles Manson is another. These are people who the world will be a better place when they are dead--and I don't say that lightly. I may be an atheist, but I believe that life is precious, al the more because I am unconvinced of the immortality of the soul.
Fred Phelps Sr. is one of those people...in my opinion, one of the very worst. The total amount of pure, unadulterated evil in the world will drop significantly the day that mother-fucker drops dead!
If there WAS a god, this piece of shit would already be roasting in the Hell he is so fond of insisting everyone else is going to.

The First Amendment does not protect hate speech, reckless defamation, or the intentional infliction of severe emotional distress. All of these are well established as civil torts that are beyond the ambit of the First Amendment's protection.

Apparently sometime last night someone spray painted on the church sign, their compound fence (they bought an entire city block and all of the family lives on the block in separate houses but all covered in a wooden privacy fence), and the front of one of the houses with "God hates Fred Phelps" and left homemade "bombs" (homemade fireworks) on the lawn.
The only reason Fred isn't dead yet is becuase his family would be able to stomp all over the person who would kill him. Plus, Fred getting to be old and almost never leaves the compound which means it's difficult to get to him anymore. Really, it's the daughter (something Phelps-Roper) who runs most of the church now.
I can only wonder what his funeral will be like. Parties, fireworks, and people shitting on his grave (if he has one, of course).
I don't counter protest them (I don't have the time) but I've had friends who do that on their days off. Mostly signs like "Free entertainment ahead". I still want to make a sign that says "Fred Phelps is the reason that God doesn't talk to us anymore" (which is funny becuase I'm atheist, but I thought that was a good line).
But I love the idea of meeting hate with humor and just showing what a joke (if a nasty one) they really are.

Maybe that means I really AM an atheist after all. I have "faith" that Christianity is wrong.
I do believe in god and at the same time I also respect the opinions of others that don't believe the same as I do. <HUGS> I also agree that this person is a shit stain on our planet and it's nice to see society taking a stand against his "preaching" and suing his ass for the torment he has caused innocent people.
Like you, many people have asked, "If there is a god, how can he allow shit like this to go on?" The simple answer is, he allows what we allow. God gave dominion of the Earth to us. I was tought that the teachings of Jesus was also him simply providing the 'instruction manual' before turning erything over.
Unfortunately we are a people that will send our children overseas to war based on deceit and lies while crime and hatred runs ramped in our own back yards. Sometimes I think the world should be greatful that I am not god since there would have been many times I would have wiped off this ball and started all over again.
I honestly don't have a problem with Christians...or with Religion. I understand why people desire it. Even though I don't believe anymore, I respect people who find and charish the "good" aspects of it.
My only problem comes from people like Freddy there who insist that EVERYONE has to believe exactly what he does, or he is allowed to make their lives miserable. That goes for Osama and his ilk, and the Republicans who think gay love isn't real and doesn't deserve the respect of the law. Their right to believe in whatever they want ends at MY doorstep...so to speak.
As for "wiping off this ball and starting over", God has LOTS of balls to play with out there. I'm sure one of them will come out right. ^0^

This creature has written four books that I know of, all with covers blatantly copied (badly) from popular fantasy novels (the one that immediately comes to mind is the one that steals a Piers Anthony pic, re-done by an idiot "artist" in their pay), and basically calling everyone who isn't a member of their particular church a tool of Satan and a harbinger of the Apocalypse. There is a photo of him and his wife, and they have got to be the most blow-dried, squeaky clean-looking, empty-eyed phsychopaths I have ever seen. Their wide, plastic smiles scare the scales offa me.
One of his books has a huge section of various symbols, both from popular culture and from religions around the world; even the Star of fucking David isn't immune from this jerk- it's "Satanic", oh yes!

That's one of the problems I have with Biblical tradition--so much of it isn't actually part of the Bible. Of course, as far as I'm concerned, the Bible is nothing more than a literary work with mythology and a bit of history (properly reworked to match the mythology.)
On the topic of Phelps dying, I think every queer person in the nation should show up to his funeral and picket, or just be there in the most flamboyant shit ever.
That said, I really find it hard to stick to my morals sometimes. There are fleeting moments of anger and hate when I think about people like this guy. I do succeed and smothering him, but when I say the world would be better off dead in the end I think that's true, because he does so much harm. It's not out of a sense of revenge or hate though. I DO NOT think it would be moral to kill such a man.
I think it's very twisted and sick that people can claim to be Christians, followers of Jesus Christ, while acting opposite of how he did. Jesus didn't go out to destroy people he went out to save them. I don't know whether he's divine or not, but if he is he surely must weep that people like this man use his name for such evil purposes.
I hope the court ruling holds up, but I have my doubts that it will.
He uses religion to teach hate, discrimination and fear, which IMO is the biggest sin there is. He is a total fanatic, as bad as all those Taliban folks blowing themselves up for their god. Both the Taliban and Fred have a twisted view on their religion and take it to their fanatical end.
Like Manacat mention, it always gets me angry on how people like him say they are Christian, but completely teach the opposite of that faith.
One has to wonder though, if Fred isn't the devil himself. Don't forget, according to Christianity, that the devil will use the faith to get people to his side. He is more than willing to bury lies in truth if he can get a few souls to his side.
Anyhow, the good news is that there is now precedence set in the courts against him. So, if he does end up showing up at more funerals, I hope more people will sue him for "inflicting cruelty". This ruling better hold, because I truly believe that he is inflicting cruelty on people. This is not freedom of speech, it's pure hatred and discrimination he's doing. The line has to be drawn somewhere.
