Just a quick update on where my life is at just now, for those I don't speak with as often.
I'm still living in Iowa and working toward finishing up my doctoral dissertation, but things are getting pretty close to finished now. I'm working on the final chapter and have a clear direction on what's needed to do that, so I should be graduating sometime during the Fall. This coming July my lease expires so I'll be moving out of Iowa and back in with my parents in Michigan for a few months while I finish up the PhD by remote.
For the friends I've made up in the Minneapolis area, I'm planning to visit up there June 25 and attend the meet that weekend, but that will be the last time I'll be visiting the area for the foreseeable future. I've made good friends up there and will miss you all, but I will of course continue to exist on the internet.
Once my dissertation is all finished up and I've graduated sometime this Fall, the next phase of my life plan will get underway. This will involve applying for a visa and, once approved, moving overseas to the United Kingdom to live there permanently. It's been a long time coming but things are finally getting close.

I'm staying here when I graduate - if I move, I'm going to San Francisco.
Be gentle with my old country, won't you? She's tired and worn and needs some people who truly love her. Whatever brings you to her shores, I wish you well.
And, for what it's worth, I'm currently in the process of going the other way. I'm planning to move to the US in August to start a PhD. I'm rather old for it, but I think, oddly, it'll be just fine.
And I do love England. I really do. Don't get me wrong... she's a beautiful country. But for whatever reason, the US feels 'right', right now.
I hope your loves stay strong and evergreen.
England will always be a part of me, and I of her. I am a very English dragon, after all. But you have to go where the Oceans of Time carry you, as well, and for now it seems as though they're bearing me to the US and you to the UK.
Maybe we should arrange to meet up sometime. Michigan's a fair step from where I'll be in Troy, NY, but if you felt so minded it's not outside the bounds of feasibility.
Might be neat to see what we could work out at some point if the opportunity for a meeting arose. :) Maybe we'll have a convenient chance at it sometime.
And also good luck with job finding in the UK ! I suppose you're going to apply for a position as a teacher in a university there ?
I'm also starting to look around a few European universities to apply when I'm done with my own PhD. Most probably not in France, my homeland, because the context is quite complex and administratively stupid with typically franco-french requirements. So the UK, Germany, Switzerland or Norway would be nice opportunities :)
