@Snapai (me) / @Snapimation (art)So I've decided to try to lose weight more concertedly again.
Which of course, requires eating less and exercising, but I have a plan!
I'm gonna do Intermittent Fasting. This basically involves skipping two meals in a row, every OTHER day.
So, normally, I eat breakfast lunch and dinner every day like this:
BLDBLDBLDBLDBLDBLDBLD
but when I'm doing this, I'll be eating:
─LDBLDBL──LDBL──LDBL─
This is basically the Eat STOP Eat program, but without buying the book :p
I've done it a few trial times before, and it works beautifully - and cutting out 6 out of every 21 meals will drop a bunch of calories out of my diet. I'm still getting lunch every single day, because work pays for my lunch - that's the most convenient meal to keep. If they didn't, and I say, had a family, I might keep dinner instead. Also, when I do eat, I eat normal full meals. Much easier than eating tasteless stuff or single-bite-meals for months on end! And interestingly, once the digestive system finishes processing its last meal, with no new input, it turns off, and all that energy and bloodflow starts going to your brain and muscles instead. It's better than the strongest cup of coffee for being awake in the morning!
As for exercise, since I feel like I need to build some strength and some calories, and want to look better, I'm gonna start off with 20 minute Power Yoga sessions every couple days. Might not be the 90 minutes at the gym lots of people do, but it's enough to wear me out, and that's enough for me for now. Power Yoga uses yoga poses and sequences as body-weight exercises, it's designed to keep a continuous energy burn to keep you sweating the whole time (keeping the muscles warmed up so they're *capable* of stretching!) The basic warmup is a cross between a burpee, and "slow practice" - if you've ever done slow practice with weight resistance, you know how grueling that can be, now combine that with a burpee! And me not fit enough to even do a pushup without my knees winding up on the floor :x
So yay. Doin' stuff! I wanna lose weight and feel great and look good for the ladies. You can't flex flab. And I wanna be able to fling myself around like I was 12 again. :v

Your body DOES go into starvation mode after a while of no eating, but it takes around 48 hours to start.
IF plans make sure you break the fast often enough that that doesn't happen (it's why it's called *intermittent* fasting)
Weight Watchers says that the shift in BMR is only by about 20% of your total metabolism and that's only with an average intake of 500 calories a day.
The NHA says that there's no real change in metabolism until you drop below 5% body fat, at which point your body severely restricts metabolism to keep you from DYING.

Generally speaking though, the way that most IF sites (yes I know they're biased) put it, your metabolism does indeed react to calorie intake, but it adjusts on a larger window than most people expect. As long as you're getting a certain number of calories within a 2-day window, doesn't matter if those are in evenly spaced bits throughout those two days, or larger meals, or if one day is almost calorie free and the other is not. It takes a WHILE to get actually hungry. At least, for me it does, what I normally feel as 'hunger' is a habitual time to eat, combined with my stomach thinking it's time to eat (same way you'd feel if you spent time right now visualizing a juicy hamburger or something you find tasty if you don't eat hamburgers.)
I've done WeightWatchers before, and it worked, but I always hated having to have tiny insignificant meals, and filling up the spaces with the most tasteless snacks on the planet. I'd prefer to still eat food I love, while dropping calories, and the only way I'm gonna manage that for me is by skipping meals here and there, on a planned basis.
Fasting actually increases your metabolic rate for the first two days of the fast. :p I'm only fasting for two meals (and you really do notice that boost).
This is assumed in general to be an evolutionary response, that was developed as a prompt to hunt when food runs out.
Also, they say drinking ice cold water lower your body temperature and then your body tries to keep the temperature up, this way you are burning energy.
Also, there are a lot of trails and footpaths near you, in town and in the Duke Forest tracts. Go out two or three times a week and walk for an hour or so. It's exercise that lets you get out and see different things and enjoy nature.
I need to loose weight so going back to calorie counting and watching fat intake. It works for me.
I agree with what Damaratus above said, but if its worked before for you, then go for it!
From what I understand, just making sure you have enough protein in your diet, and use your muscles, will keep your body from eating them?
I dunno, most diets that involve exercise and new stuff nowadays online use Paleo eating....I'm not planning on adjusting my food though. Just eating less of it. :)
My suspicion is that all these diets, fad and non-fad diets, exist because they actually all do work for a few someones. But people go CAPITALISM and market these diets as if they work for everyone. And then fad diet bounty hunters go "THESE ALL SUCK, FOLLOW THE ONE TRUE DIET" and they pimp whatever they want, and then no one knows what the truth is, when the truth is, you need a diet tweaked infinitely far for your needs. this is a hypothesis only though! And i never heard of Paleo eating--*lookies it* Ooh, well at least it's all tasty dishes.
GET A JOB ON THE RAILROAD!!!!!!!!
DAILY ACTIVITIES INCLUDE YANKING YOURSELF ON AND OFF RAIL CARS, SETTING AND RELEASING HAND BRAKES, WALKING MILES EACH DAY WITH SEVERAL POUNDS OF GEAR, AND CARRYING FRED* AROUND.
AND IF THAT'S NOT ENOUGH YOU CAN GET PARED WITH *THAT* ENGINEER** THAT BREAKS KNUCKLES*** EVERY OTHER DAY
* Flashing Rear End Device
**not in effect at GCR campus
*** AAR Standard knuckles weigh approximately 78 to 88 pounds
Also, DDR is good exercise. :3
The only problem would be that it's really not a sound investment if you don't intend to really get many other games.
Besides - the only thing your body really uses protein for is...building muscle (and other tissue)!
It will mostly eat its own fat, because that's what it's stored for. :P
I'm going to lower my average food intake by 500-600 calories a day, which works out to just over 1 pound a week loss. Same gentle loss I'd have with Weight Watchers or Jenny Craig. But I don't have to have tiny snack-size meals like those require.
If you need to change it up though, I went from 210ish to 175 just doing this:
1.) Ordering what I usually order, but cutting it exactly in half. Save remaining for next meal.
2.) Only drinking water
3.) Always chewing gum instead of snacking
There was exercise in there too but that is far less effective in terms of results than cutting calorie intake.
Also: Take fiber. Drastic changes in your diet like you're doing *will* take a toll on your digestive system if you don't supplement it with fiber.
If I simply don't get the meal in the first place, though, it's easy! :D
I prefer to rely on my laziness than on my willpower ;)
One bit of advice I could offer about exercise... When you're worn out and feel like you can't do anymore - try to go a little further. You'll probably surprise yourself. I'm not saying hurt yourself, I'm just saying push your limits a little. It might not feel too good the first handful of times, but hey, it's exercise. It's not supposed to feel good. XD
Anyway, good for you, man! Good luck!
Great job on doing all the research, and don't give up! X3
My mate has decided that he wants to finally take up his new year's resolution to lose some weight as well. I think it's a noble goal. I will admit I'm a bit... biased against fat people in that I dislike when people don't take care of themselves. But yeah, never heard of this dieting scheme before. I've heard of quite a few though. Hope you can manage the hunger on the 'off days'. Maybe get some low-cal snacks? (i.e. fruit)
The most popular one recently has to be that HCG diet.
But yeah, it's not hard. I think when you're overweight, you don't get hungry as fast or something - don't really start to feel anything that could be qualified as "hunger" until the fast is almost over. Just feel sorta like "Fff, it's the time of day I'm supposed to be eating and I'm not eating, what do I doooooo..."
