I guess that depends on the person. I saw a need in telling it my mom. I wanted to show her that I have a certain talent and she can be proud of me.

ich kritzel mein zeug am esstisch, wo es jeder sehen kann, udn meine sachen auf dem computer sind nicht versteckt. kein problem soweit.

meine mutter kennt meinen nickname, aber weiß nichts damit anzufangen. vom löwen weiß sie wahrscheinlcih auch nichts. udbn wenn ich mich nicht irre, interessiert es sie auch nicht. es sind fantasiegeschöpfe, was solls? sie macht mich sogar auf fotos von tieren aufmerksam, die als vorlagen dienen könnten, oder wurfsendungen, prospekten, die nützlich sein könnten.

Ich finde es eigentlich recht angenehm das meine Mutter und vorallem meine Schwester Interesse zeigt. Bei meiner Schwester ist das auch kein Problem, da sie ziehmlich so ist wie ich. Ich versuche sie grad wieder dazu zu bewegen zu malen. Hat sie damals immer gemacht aber im moment ist die Zeit knapp da sie Musik studiert.

But isn't it rather sad that they don't really care? I like it that my mom and my sis wanna see what I do. Since no one in my family has the ability to express their feelings with words in front of others my art is a way to express myself. Although I don't show every pic to them.

Yeah it seems even more difficult to be furry in the USA. I'm glad that it's not that hard here. I still don't know if my mom understood everything but I think my one sis does. She's quite like me. But I'm still glad for such a open-minded mother.

Well I'm not. I try to put lack of financial involvment from other people in this hobby. Some of the comission stuff is... plain lame and unimaginitive.

I told my parents about being into furry and having a furry name, mostly because of the fact they were perturbed about the fact my friends, other furries, called me Nova and that I called them by their furry names. IE: my mother couldn't believe that Whitewind, Jouva and Peimur were the real names of people so she got worried about just who I was hanging around. Mind you she found out about all of this by accident when she visited when I lived in Gainesville.

After telling her, she especially didn't like the fact I went by a fake name and "pretended" to be a character I wasn't, because in her mind it is absolutely childish behavior and just plain wrong. She is also the type of person not to understand the use of different internet screen names, or the creation of artistic characters, unless you are an actor in a play, in general, not to mention her only clue about what furry is all about is a CSI episode. She is also not very open minded about the idea of having a different than mainstream theology, so I left the spiritual side out of it and downplayed furry as being into the art, comics and memorabilia of cartoon animals. Unfortunately she has this idea of what adults should do verses kids and thus couldn't really be comfortable with that concept either.

So yeah. My dad, on the other hand, though slightly weirded out by the concept of having a character personality and depicting oneself as an animal, is fine with it.

They have both seen some of my art. My dad likes it. My mom only likes the stuff that looks at least somewhat normal (my wildlife/ surrealism).

My has a similar reaction to the fandom. She believes the everything about is either childish or down right weird. Unfortunately, she saw "that one episode" of CSI before I even knew I WAS a furry. Now it's the 'elephant in the room,' so to speak, whenever we're together. It makes me wish I could introduce her to some of you guys or take her to one of the cons...

Oh no not that one episode. ^^ I guess when she knows what furry means (I never said that I am a "furry" just because she cannot speak english) I would alwas get weird looks from her, because she always watches CSI. ^^ And when I would make fursuits, but I'm still not that far. (one day I wanna make one).
If it's a good idea to take her to a con? Ok, I never was on a con, but I heard so many things there. I think that would maybe scare the hell out of my mom.

Cons can be a good place to introduce someone to furry however, you have to look into which ones. Some are not as family friendly as others, and you still have to deal with people taking their fetishes into the open, thus helping the CSI minded people find evidence for their stereotype. You might want to check how she reacts to a sci-fi con first. If she can't take the geekiness there, then there may be no way she can be comfortable with furry.

Oh that sounds like it wasn't an easy talk woth your mom. I never sat down with her and told her everything, I just tell her sometimes a few things or answer her questions on certain pictures. Since I don't really see this spiritual site in the whole thing or at least I never thought about it, I left that out too. I know how she thinks (at least halfway) so I know what I can tell her. But I'm still not that comfortable when I tell her something about my fursona.

I understand the fursona thing. I think that is what my mom had the hardest problem with accepting because it is like having to explain the existence of an alter ego or character you play. Many adults can't understand why one adult would do things a kid likes to do, such as pretend to be an animal thing. Personally, although I don't live with my mom anymore I try to avoid talking about furry or showing her my art because I know it causes friction.

Slightly it does. He and I used to be close, then when I got out of the military we started drifting apart. He has expressed some strange anger when it comes to me and such. My mom doesn't understand it, nor does the rest of my family.

Hmm, my mother...no, I wouldn't tell her. She probably wouldn't freak out, but I think she'd be happier not knowing, yah? I get the feeling I wouldn't hear the end of it...my father wouldn't mind either way, he's supportive of me in pretty much anything I do, especially if its involves something creative like artwork.

The mother of my mate, Erdenshire, knew that he was a furry, and accepted it, and even finds it interesting. I don't remember how she found out, but even then she didn't mind it at all.

My mother knows that i'm a furry, she just doesn't know what a furry is. She half knows about my fursona, it's more that she knows that i am really into animals and draw/write about them.

well, that really depends on what you think their reaction would be. I can't afford the risk of her severing my only current conection to the fandom. But once in college in a year and a half I intend to tell her everything.

I'm not a furry, but maybe this counts too:

I used to draw myself as an anthropomorphic animal (first a guinea pig, then a cat, then the cibex) since I was about eight years old.
My parents know all of this, accept it and consider both my art and the fact that I seem to be a born therianthrope (I've shown signs of therianthropy since I was a small child) awesome and interesting. They love to see my art and my mother loves to spend time researching on therianthropy, being proud of how special her daughter is.

Considering what you and other wrote, I think both you and me are very lucky. o.o

Yeah that's true. Ah I should tell my mom about the therianthrope thing. I'm only since 2005 into this whole thing so I don't know anything about it. But when I try to remember some things from my childhood that I have to say I've always signs of therianthropy too, althoug I did not draw myself as a animal char. My mom always knew that, I guess because of that she wasn't really suprised as I told her I want to go to a "Rudeltreffen" (I first got a rather funny look from her as I mentiones it).
I can still remember that I always behaved like an animal (I grew up with dogs, cats, guinea pigs, chickens and other animals) around the certain animals. I never really tried to talk to my cat like a human, but like a cat. I still do that with Spike.
Sometimes my sister and I played that we were fantasycreatures. We walked on hands and feet had a tail (a scarf) and ran around the house. ^^ I still have the habit to run up the stairs on my hands and feet sometimes. ^^ It's funny. And faster.
I guess my mom is really proud of me and my art. Especially that I can earn a bit money with it.

I'm not really a family person but I like it to have a good realitionship to my mom. We can really be happy. ^^

Ah, I'm the weird one in my family too. And to be the weird one in a family of weird persons is not easy. ^^

My mother is dissociative, which means that she has multiple personalities. When I told her about Jade (my fursona), she freaked out and wanted me to see her therapist because she thought I was dissociative too. She does understand the idea of totems, though, so when I explained it to her in that way, she didn't mind anymore.
My dad's cool with it. He thought it was a little weird at first, but I kinda rubbed off on him a bit, and he's started playing with the idea of "fursonas" himself, although I know he'll never be a furry (he's such a dragon; we both watch Jewelry Television and drool). He also thought it was funny when my mate dressed up in his fursuit and made all the neighborhood kids spaz on Halloween last year. X3
As far as art of my fursona, no, because I've only ever drawn two pictures of Jade, both of which are posted here on FA. The first was a rather racy picture that I gave to my mate for Christmas last year. No naughty bits were showing, but it would have caused a lot of trouble anyway... I plan to show them pictures later, when there are more, though!

^^ Oh wow, that really sounds like fun with your family. I explained it to my mother in a different way that "Hi, mom I'm a furry" too. I said that Yedaji is something like my alter-ego to represent myself on the net. Because I never would post my real name here or a photo of me. I slowly tell her more about everything, but I don't think I will show her my adult art. She would think I'm completely crazy (and I mean crazy in a bad way).

Well, before leaving for the UK the first time to spend time with my then boyfriend, i slowly let them in on furries and that stuff... In the end, all my parents had to say on the topic (and to this day still do) is "Make sure to wear a condom if you get up to anything" and anything else about it well - they are impressed with the quality of some of the work that goes on, but the sexual side of it we don't talk about - the same way they don't tell me about what happened when i was conceived and so on ;)

So... My entire family knows - in fact, the first DKFurs new year's meet was held at mum and dad's house, and even though they were not there, they were quite happy with the fact that the house was standing when we turned it over to them afterwards :) So... yeah, they know ;)

Telling my mom about this fandom wasn't that hard and not the problem. The problem was ans still is that I am afraid of what she thinks about anything, not because the furry thing is freaky, but because since my family (or the part of it that's not totally insane) is not a normal family like other and we had and still have a rather hard time, I'm afraid my mom thinks I try to compensate something with it. Ok, that might be true, but it still scares me that she maybe things so.

Hmm... well, if that is the case, you will simply have to show her that you have friends here who care for you and enjoy your company and such :) Though, i have a feeling she might know this already... Mothers are like that ;)

My family knows about furry and doesn't really mind.. or understand it. Of course I haven't lived with them for almost a decade now so that plays a bit of a part in it. I don't tell them about the freaky stuff and.. they're never going to know about it either. There's just no need for those worlds to collide.

I never *really* officially explained my.. 'fursona'.. to them, but they know it exists and we have strange little awkward conversations about it once in awhile. Like why is my youtube name ArtySkunk (something like that.. skunk is in there) or why is my AIM icon a little gray + white guy..

My mom doesn't understand why I have a fetish for skunks at all... but she collects *everything* under the sun thats 'cows' so it's not too strange for her.. she even made me a neat little throw blanket that I totally dig ^^

I guess I did tell my parents sorta, but that's mostly just because it's not as big a deal with me. For me having a fursona is just a for fun thing, there's no real reason behind it. It's just a way I represent myself on the internet for fun, so that's what they know. They also know I draw anthro, though i've tried to keep the fact I draw pr0n from them... they probably know anyway. XD My parents are the very open and accepting type so really I can tell them anything without worrying about their reaction :P I don't usually tell them anything, but if I -wanted- to, I could! XD

Way back when my parents found out about my fursona, my mom was very interested in the whole idea and asked me if I could make one for her. My dad on the other hand wasn't to thrilled about the whole thing, because he like your parents had seen the Yiff episode of CSI and thought that it was nothing but that. He's thick skulled and it's hard to get anything into his head. Oh well, can't win them all! lol.

My parents keep encouraging me to draw the "weird stuff" I draw. They don't know about me being furry, or even furryness in general, or other things about me. I don't live with them anymore, so I don't really feel the desire to tell them. Although I have wanted to tell them a few other things about me, but I know they would hate me if I did. And me being a furry or having a fursona isn't really it.

My b/f's parents know about my art. His mother has no idea what furries are, but thinks my art is adorable. As for my mom, I can't remember if I've shown her my art, but I'm pretty sure she wouldn't care either.

That sounds ok. To be honest I like that my mother cares. And I also like that my family is not really a family that talks about every emotional aspect of anything so she doesn not ask too many questions.

My parents learned about Furries through me, so they didn't have any negative preconseptions.

They're both pretty intersted in my Furry art (only the clean stuff so far) and are even cool with my "Wall O' Porn" after they saw it (I had forgot to take it down one time when they were over).

What's really interesting, is that my mother is now asking that I draw her as a Dragon.
