Simple question really: How long do you look at a picture before deciding to favorite it?
If you haven't really thought about it, try opening a picture in your submissions, and see how long it takes you to decide to either a) push the back button or b) +fav.
What sort of criteria do you have to make a comment?
I'm just curious, really. Most of the time when I +fav something, I don't comment. I know some people consider this rude, but I have the mindset that people only really want to read something if it's a) sincere appreciation, b) some valuable form of critique, or c) humorous. I know it's kindof a prudish for me to say, but when I get comments like "cool" or "looks good", it's not much different than no comment at all.
The other thing I'm interested in knowing is how many seconds of enjoyment you need to appreciate something someone typically spends a fair amount more time to make. If you were to properly critique a piece of art, you could probably spend several minutes looking at the anatomy, technique, lighting, perspective, proportions, composition, etc. I know when I see art that is above my level, I try to look at some of the work that went into the details and try to figure out the process that went into making them. Of course, not everyone cares about knowing the level of work and detail that goes into art, and just wants to enjoy it for what it is.
Tell me your process! I'm not going to change anything I do from the responses. This is just for sating my curiosity. c:

FA+

I generally fav very quickly, too, within the first few seconds of looking at it.
Faving is mostly just something spontaneous or if it is something I want to read later... xP
As for comments... I know I'm guilty of just saying "it looks good" (though in more words; I tend to be more verbose than is strictly neccessary) but that's often only because the artist has said they don't think it's all that. If they're obviously pleased with it I'll either leave a "witty" remark or none at all, unless I pick a very specific thing to critique.
I comment always, I believe artists enjoy even silly comments on their submissions like 'Dude that's super sexy' or 'You char is so hot, i wish he'd fuck me and such'. I enjoy such comments alot, so I give em back to the artists that I admire :D Of course it depends, in the really amazing pictures I always comment properly about the shadows, the anatomy, the colors, the lights, the position etc etc :)
So u should comment too :D it can be fun if the artist replies <3! :P

so it varies for me dependent on the picture, but I will rarely instant fav. And I sometime fav with out commenting, mostly on old work that was posted a whild back, I feel to late to the game that a comment would matter there. But I'm trying to make it a personal rule that anything I fav anything, leave a comment. I think if comments means half as much to the artist as they do to me, then I really should to make their day.
how long I look really depends on how much I like the picture. I might stare at a picture I like a lot for a few minutes; others, only a short amount of time. I've been known to go through binges and look through the thousands of favorites I have between my FA and DA accounts over a couple days just to soak in all the good art again, so often if I like a pic I keep coming back to it over and over.
Comments, well, most of teh time I TRY to give feedback, but Im not really good at it. So Im guilty at Nice work comments, though I try to add something more personal to it.
I'll probably spend 30 seconds to a minute to comment on something if it inspires me to comment, and I definitely won't comment unless I have something useful to say. I tend to comment more than I fav.
I get about 150-200 submissions in my inbox per day, so I can't really spend an hour on each piece going over all the details in depth before moving on to the next.
Every now and then I'll go back and see work I hadn't fave'd, and decide it's fave worthy. So I do range, but most of it's probably that instant wow effect.
As to comments. I comment with whatever emotion I have. That's all there is too it.
If the subject is one of my fetishes I'll glance over it, see if there's anything about it which is distinctive and then favourite it instantly if there is. If there's nothing to distinguish it I'll hold fire on the +Fav button unless the art is particularly well drawn.
If the piece is something like a panorama or particularly striking landscape I'll take a closer look at it, see if there's any sort of minute detail which obviously took some serious effort/skill I'll +Fav it instantly, if not I'll move back, view the whole thing once again and +Fav it if it strikes me as aesthetically pleasing. I can't explain what I find nice to look at in a landscape because I don't see enough of them.
As for comments. The only time I leave a comment is if it was art drawn for myself, something which made me say "Wow!" aloud or if it was drawn by a close friend who is seeking feedback.
After that initial 'wow' I usually art-nerd out and dissect everything about the piece of course! But the initial 3 to 5 second impression is the most important for me :)
Both are self explanatory, but none the less, an instant fave will be when I look at an image, and it strongly and immediately appeals to me. No actual thought goes into this, it's just a gut impulse that I really like the image. "I can't get this pic out of my mind" is an image I'll be compelled to give a good look-over again and again. If I didn't favorite the picture when I first saw it, I'll be more likely to favorite it when it's tomorrow and I'm still thinking about the picture.
I'll always leave a comment when I favorite something, because I like knowing why people favorite my stuff, so I imagine others might like knowing why I'm favoriting something of theirs. As such, it may take a while for me to actually physically +favorite the picture if I'm having trouble wording a comment. Just for the record, I don't think it's rude when people don't comment, but I do appreciate when people do comment. :P
For favourites, it's usually to do with whether something's affected me personally : whether it's something incredibly attractive or sexy, something vast and inspiring, something creative, or something that strikes a chord with me. It's not so much the quality or even the content so much as that the piece has some significance to me.
Commenting on things, however, only happen when I think a piece is really awesome. and I always do my best to be constructive/humorous.
As for favoriting, I simply download any image I like instead of favoriting. Usually only favorite funny pictures that I'd like to see when I log into FA.
He's the nicest guy but geez, I don't see how he manages to reply to EVERY comment oo
Though I tend to +fav adult material less... but if the image is well done regardless, I'll still favorite it.
In terms of what criteria I have to comment, if I +fav, I also make a comment as to why I like the image with a few details I liked.
I'm not the type to say "oh hey nice pic" and leave because that doesn't help the artist much.
Things I normally say are comments such as "I liked the painterly style you used in this image" or "The lines are very well done"
If I truly appreciate the art or find it fascinating for any reason (e.g. technique, color use, anatomy, perspective) then I'll keep it open a while longer, look at what specifics really catch my attention, and most likely save it on my hard drive for later reference in case I want to test out any ideas for my own use.
In general, I appreciate the art as a whole, favorite/comment on it, then examine it in further detail if I truly liked it.
About comments, it depends. I do like leaving comments if I have something clever (or at least, I think I have) to say.
May it be a pun, criticism, opinion or trivia, I rarely just say "nice, +fav" unless I'm REALLY impressed, to the point I want the artist to know I really love the piece.
My two cents :)
i look over the pic an since i have full view off so i might have to click full view, look at the picture entirly
take a look at how the picture is drawn an colored and how well it was done.
take a look to see if there any mistakes that can be seen an how noticable.
when it comes to the style of the pic is drawn in i take a look at how much effort they put into it.
then how interesting the picture is to me.
i only fave pics that i like quite abit and pics i got of one my characters or pic i got for a friend or artist as a gift.
i do comment on pics if i have something to say about it or if i find it interesting an so i compliments the person but i only look at pics i feel like to.
pics i have posted do get more more faves then comments from ppl
the 2nd most faved is from 5 months an only had 47 faves while most faved pic was from 2 months ago with 50 faves.
while the pics i have most faves are mostly from 5 months ago so ppl pretty much stopped liking to look at what i post
Likewise, if I know from experience that the artist doesn't really care about, read, or respond to comments...I don't bother with em'.
I see responding to comments a lot like how I see commenting on the art in the first place. If there's a specific point worth following up on, or a particular observation that was made that's especially appreciated...worth a shout back. So long as it's not a "thanks" and nothing else. That's like saying "nice art" on a piece of artwork, not really any point in doing so.
But I also tend not to comment on +fav'd images. No idea why.
Generally, I fave soemthing cus its good quality or amusing.
However if theres like 100 or less, then I'll open them all (aside from usually music or writing) and spend a little more time on them.
As for comments I have two criteria: If I find it absolutely fantastic (as in it really strikes me that the artist worked very hard on the piece or it is something I really like) I'll comment something even if its "rawr ^.=.^" or if I have any input on it like say one ear is way bigger than the other or if I can relate to it somehow.
Good pron I tend to hoard (on my hard drive) though >.=.> *grins*
So for a pic to be fav'd I have to at least think the thumbnail worthy (unless I'm linked to it another way). At thumbnail size, you really can't see anything artistic; often can't even tell what's going on, but usually you can. If the artist has "SEX" thumbnail instead of a pic I'll probably stop watching them pretty quick. After that, there's really a lot of reasons I favourite a pic.
I agree with the +faving and not commenting thing. +fav is a great way to say you like something without spamming a page with meaningless "Awesome!" comments. I leave those sometimes to, but usually only if I know the artist and I know they care if I personally think it's awesome. Cause I know I like reading those from friends.
Enjoyment really depends. Could be a quick comedic pic that makes me laugh that only takes 3-5 seconds to get which might get a +fav. Some pics I go back to and look at time and time again. It's almost never an "artistic" reason, I just like what I like. However, art is about making what the audience likes or portraying an opinion or something, so maybe that's the same thing. If I'm drawing, or specifically studying art, then I look at art in great detail but mostly there's just too much else going on. If a picture is really well done with all those elements, it'll get a +fav, and then usually a comment to.
Other reasons to +fav are to show appreciation to friend's artwork; if I really like the characters, or the pose, or it's very unique and such. A lot of it is really random luck on how I'm feeling to... if you searched my favs you'd notice sometimes I fav a lot and then almost nothing for long periods of time =)
My criteria goes like this:
It must be artistically well done.
It must be erotically compelling.
It must be in color.
It must move me.
I won't +fav anything that isn't super hot porn. :) And I want my favorites to be a gallery that someone with similar tastes to mine can look at and admire the care with which each piece has been selected. And for it to be useful to them as a resource so that they don't have to trod through a bunch of lesser works to find the top notch stuff.
It usually only takes me a few seconds to decide to +fav something. You mentioned how there will be many hours that have gone into the creation of the image... seemingly implying that its appraisal shouldn't be brief. However, the nature of artwork is that the very purpose of all that careful work is to create that moment of emotion as every painstaking line and brush stroke enters the viewer's senses all at once. The product of hours of effort is distilled into one frozen moment which elicits a powerful emotion.
If the piece hasn't gripped you by the third second, it's not going to grip you by the third minute or the third hour either. When it's right, the emotional effect is an immediate one. A good piece of art _strikes_ you.
Any piece which I +fav is one I'm also going to keep in a folder of images that I spend a lot of time looking at and enjoying. So, while my initial selection process may only take a few seconds, my appreciation of the piece will be much longer than that. I have artwork that I still cherish from decades ago.
On top of that, whether or not I've looked at the piece itself recently, it's visage remains in my mind and becomes part of the greater whole.
Anyway... that's how it works for me. :)
I start feeling like my favorites list is just a dumping ground for something I looked at for just a few seconds and liked on a whim.
Lately I stopped bothering to favorite.
The fewer comments there are already, the more likely I'll comment. Usually it is for something in particular that caught my eye about an image.
I say "I like this" by faving. Personally I think clutter comments are just ... that.
About the comment part. I do some fav-and-runs sometime but most often i try to comment with something supportive or funny and i also try to avoid words and phrases like "cool, awesome, looks good etc" because i think those words have been used so much that they don't really hold any kind of value anymore. I don't flame someone for commenting like that on one of my pictures, though. I like to think that they were kind enough to comment and that they really did have nothing else to say. It is just like that sometimes. Sometimes you can't really give any kind of professional insight or make up a joke because the piece of art is just too "awesome" or just plain ordinary to what the artist have done before.
