Not an artist but i use mine for transferring photos to be used for my submilation printing.

I got a Cannon LIDE 200 from Amazon. It's very inexpensive and does a great job

I actually have a LiDE 200 at the moment and it's not too bad (scans a bit pale), but I was very disappointed in it breaking so soon. It's not completely broken but recently it stopped scanning the full plate, cutting off progressively more at the top and one side (over an inch now). No amount of fiddling or reinstalling drivers etc will fix it. :/

I was going to recommend the cannon too, I've traveled with it for a couple years , never had issue with it..

I'd have to recommend it again too, but mine is the LiDE 30 lol I've had it for nearing 8 years and still going strong- if a bit outdated... Hm.

Ohh wow that sucks to hear. :( I would still stand by cannon though. I've been really pleased maybe go with a more upgraded 210 or one of hte newer ones?

I've had this one for a few years now :) Not only is it a nice flatbed, it's also LARGE FORMAT so I don't have to scan in pieces!

I've heard good things about the Mustek ones! How is the image quality?

Honestly I never really exploit it to the full potential but the resolution is high and especially if you're inking the pic you can get amazingly clear scans :D

I bought an Epson scanner years ago.. prolly when I was 15? it still works but it has gotten scratched up and marked up over the years. It's okay, and was under $150. I can get you the specs on if if you'd like.

My school has INCREDIBLY nice scanners, Epson as well, but I do not know much about them. Could get you the info in about a week though. However, we'd probably be looking at way over $250, as the scan beds are massive.

I also have a printer/scanner that is a canon. It is a very nice scanner, but it isn't entirely user friendly and I haven't quite figured it out. It was right at $250.

I had an older Epson one for a while. It was pretty good, grabbed it off eBay cheap after a recommendation, but it got a bit too scratched up to keep using. :< Unfortunately they are a pain to get now cos of the fact you can't get them new.

I would think that the ones your school has would run into a lot of cash, as larger plate scanners tend to start at $500...for cheap ones. :S

There was one really cheap but crappy one floating around for about $200. I got a refurbished version of this instead. Great scanner, but it's a brick and it cost $700.

HP DeskJet 2050 is what I use. $42.95 at Addoway. I paid about $89 for mine at WalMart.

I don't scan very often...but when I do, that's what I use.

I have a seven year old Canon LiDE. It still works except it sucks the yellows out of brown and makes them more pink, which drives me nuts (I must not have used a lot of browns when I got it, or maybe it's the age). My school has a huge Epson that I loved when I was there. It still helps to edit it a little bit after the scan but it doesn't kill colours. I think the A4/regular sized scanners should all be in your price range - it's just the huge ones that jump into the thousands. I have an Epson Perfection V500 photo, and its been doing great for the last couple of years, I think it may be a bit more then you set but not much

I've been using various Mustek A3 scanners for many years. Decent quality for a low price. If you need a large format scanner and don't have megabucks this is the way to go. Various models can range from $100 to $300. Shop around and check for compatibility with you operating system.

There's the CanoScan 9000F but honestly I'm not sure I could justify buying it since it's twice the cost of their own LiDE 700F. If it breaks in a few years, you could just get another one, but better/cheaper and you'd still be ahead.

I use a HP deskjet combo. the scanner does good, it's the driver that makes me not wanting to recommend HP in this case. they "updated" the already fidgety XP scanner driver to an even more user-unfriendly win7 version. I would have kept the XP, but the CD refused to work... and I can't give them my piece of mind about what they did. it sdtarts with the preview scanning at 200dpi, which is compeltely unecessary. and you can't adjust anything and save it for next time. -.-
