No offense to The Lion King, of course. I love that movie. But I also love Kimba, and it's pretty much been admitted that Disney "borrowed" from it.
ANYWAY, now that I think about it, it is a lot like Babar, too. xD
...Anyway
I feel the same EXACT way. I mean, some stuff you see is a 100% obvious for-money rip-off (electronics do it all the time), but when it comes to art, movies, books, etc., a little bit of influence, or in come cases, outright "borrowing" happens, and it's not always a bad thing. In fact, someone once told me that any good story is simply a mixing-together of seven or so good stories the author heard in his lifetime. And that makes sense to me, and I see no hurt in it. AT. ALL.
Which is why, on a related note, I think people who actually yell at each other over the Kimba/Lion King thing are being ridiculous -- they're both amazing works of art, and not only is it OK to like both -- it's very reasonable.
Personally, I didn't think there'd be so much in common between Babar and The Lion King until I actually began to look closely at both stories. What's interesting is that originally, Scar was supposed to throw Simba off of Pride Rock, but then the fire was going to close around him and consume him. In other words, Scar was going to end up dying exactly like the Hunter did.
I wonder... what the other four stories were that were mixed into The Lion King?
After you said it was you, I thought, he can't possibly think that way then, he must be kidding. xD
Hmmm...
So far we have...Kimba, Babar, and Hamlet, correct? I bet we could think of the other four eventually. x3
Also, I admit it was bait. ^^ *Playful grin.* I do think that it's a little silly that a point in favour of "Disney ripped off Kimba" is that Simba's name rhymes, when Simba's name is Swahili for "lion". You can't get any more co-incidental than that. :) But yeah. ^^
We'll just have to pay very close attention to everything made before 1994 (probably before 1989, actually).
...I think that all started when at some meeting, a woman said something like, "Disney movies are known for their sweet and caring mothers -- when will we see that again?" and someone at Disney told her, "Wait until you see Kimba's mother -- she should live up to your expectations", or something like that, and that's the only reason anyone knows "Kimba" was his original name. xD
Again, I don't give a rat's butt that the Lion King was inspired by Kimba -- Walt Disney and Osamu Tezuka were friends, and probably both would fin humor in the fact that it happened. But I mean. Come on. xD I wish more people would just accept it, is all. xD
...Off topic -- omg...I'm so hungry...
Oh dear. You should eat something, silly pup. :)
...I can see that whoever suggested seeing "Kimba's mother" could have very well been speaking with tongue-in-cheek. ;) I'm certain most of the animators grew up watching Kimba, and I'm just as certain they were well aware of the history, and significance of doing a lion-themed movie after someone else created a huge saga about one searching for a way to have pred and prey live together in harmony. ;)
I don't mind the name Kimba, I kinda like it more than the original Leo, but I guess that might be because Kimba was introduced to me as "Kimba", and not Leo. xD I found out that he was "Leo" later.
Hrm, well... Let's see...
The Lion King is a lot like Monty Python and the Holy Grail-- No wait... that was a parody.
Terminator Two! Oh wait... parody.
star wars?
el nin~o?
eh... I don't know if this is quite on target for my expertise? ;)
