Well, it's difficult to advise if we don't know who or what the SFW story is about.

Try starting where we all start, in the morning. Describe a morning routine, or wake up scenario.
If it starts at an event, start a minute before it. Or an hour. or a day. OR a month. However long you feel it takes to establish a feeling of "normal". The longer the "normal" portion, the bigger the shock comes when the event arrives.
