Giant Steam Sale
Uh just a heads up to everyone, Steam is having a sale. No not like they do every day, I mean like a GIANT FUCKING SALE. Like huge lists of things on sale, changing out every day for I didn't check how long. So if you have it, go look.
Edit:
No I don't think you understand how awesome this sale is.
Valve Complete pack: 77% off (from $215 down to $49.99)
The Sims 3 pack: 67% off (from $240 down to $80)
TellTale Games Complete Pack: 79% off (from $234.07 down to $49.99)
And lots of games that are only on sale for like the next 7 or 8 hours, before it's switched out for a new batch!
To be honest I'm not sure which ones are which. It's kind of confusing. Try to really think about it before giving into the pressure of the sale count down clock. One time Steam actually brought back some of the sale offers from previous days for a last chance buy, but no gaurentee they'll do it with this. That's the kind of pressure they're counting on. :O

I think part of it, is that companies prefer it if you buy games digitally, since you can't resell them, and you can't really share them, and they save on printing and packaging and distribution costs. So maybe they should be charging you less right along anyways, when you think about it.
I was really tempted to buy the Sims 3 Pack. But then I was looking over the original prices for their games. Sims 3 and Sims 3: Generations are the same price. How the crap, are they charging the same price for an expansion pack, as they are for the core game?! That and I really don't want to spend $80 in one blow on the pack, especially since I already have the Sims 3 core game.
Maybe if it was individually knocked down, I'd get one expansion. I refuse to give them top dollar.
As for the why of the sales, it's actually a bit of consumer psychology - by slashing prices significantly on products, they can spur a sudden buying spree on those products, resulting in a much greater profit than they would otherwise get. That's pretty much the rationale behind ANY sale, as a matter of fact, especially when you start getting reductions of 50% or more. And with digital distribution, you no longer have the "limited supply" problem you do with physical merchandise.
Valve HAS upped the ante on these sales, though, by tying what amounts to an achievement system to their sales - IE, buy this game and play it, and you get a chance to win free games from your wishlist! And this time around, you can also redeem these achievements for free DLC packages, including some special made ones for TF2 and Portal 2. In essence, the sale becomes a kind of metagame in and of itself!
I suspect the other packs have something similar going on.
