But it's just a silly lil thing I'm having a try at, hoping I'll get some feedback so I know if I should keep this going or take another direction...
This is a preview of an up and coming novel I have in writing. It’s a sci-fi/ fantasy tale about a boy pilot of a ship called ‘Night Dragon’ who comes up against a series of events which all link to one important fact about him...
This extract begins after the boy, Vince, and his new ‘friend’ Kay, a girl with a wolf’s tail (honest, there’s a reason she has a tail, it’s not just a fetish... well ok it’s a fetish but it has a point as well...) have just escaped a set of traps with a mysterious artefact. Yet instantly after this Kay is captured by a Wolf Anthro, named Scarloe, and it’s up to Vince to rescue her...
The guards marched their prisoner into the air-station and pushed her forward, where the smug figure was there to greet them. Scarloe smirked and lifted the head of his captive, calmly looking into her fierce eyes.
‘Kay ‘Eko Wuulfe. How many times have you evaded me? I’ve got you now my pretty little thing...’ The girl growled.
‘Don’t think it will be for long, because my friends...’
‘...Cannot chase a speeding railship, and certainly won’t be able to find you once we pass the sea tunnels.’ Scarloe sniggered and shook his head, stroking her cheek in mock-tenderness, ‘It’ll just be us, dearest...’ Kay gave a snarl of disgust and pulled away. With a quick flick of her tail, she caught his face with the metal bracelet she wore on it. The wolf yelped and buckled upon impact, snorting furiously at her as he pressed on a fresh wound rising up on his furred cheek.
‘That... Was a very silly thing to do, Wuulfe. Get her on board!’ He roared to the guards, and Kay was forced onto a dark, formal-looking railship sitting in the station, with barred windows and sliding doors, simple but sinister. The Wolf rubbed his cut and licked the blood from his fingers, grunting angrily before following them onto the train.
Moments later the door slid shut and the motors on the railship roared to life, propelling it away from the station along the rails above the city. Only then did the figure hidden in the shadows emerge, watch the train for a moment as it sped away, then turned and raced for his ship docked only moments away.
~
Vince raced into the cockpit of the Night Dragon and leapt into the seat, grappling the steering and thrusting his hand on the lever to fasten himself into the seat.
‘Vince?’ The ship’s computer chimed as he boy thudded buttons around him, the panels and equipment around him whirring to life.
‘AVOS, engines, now!’ Without complaint, the ship suddenly burst into life, the engines beneath roaring through the walls. Vince threw the controls forward and the ship rose, spun and burst into the air, racing up high above the city.
‘Vince?’ AVOS asked again. Vince got up and peered down, spotting the travelling railship, picking up speed as it followed its tracks towards the sea tunnels lit up in the distance.
‘Kay got captured. We’re going to rescue her...’
~
On the railship, Kay struggled in the grips of the guards, so far managing to evade the chains they tried to place on her, Scarloe barking orders at them to hold her down. One cuff was snapped to her wrist, and the next instant the same guard found it swinging up and knocking him square in the face, throwing him back, unconscious. Another guard bravely grabbed her and clipped the other cuff on her free wrist behind her back, but her still free tail caught him in the chest and he was sent reeling as well.
‘ENOUGH!’ A sharp edge suddenly met inches from Kay’s neck and she stopped in her tracks. She found herself staring at Scarloe, his Razo-blade held against her with fury scribbled across his dark features, blood drooling from the weeping slash she had caused to his cheek. ‘I’ve had as much as necessary of this, you ignorant pup! You’re making me very angry...’
Kay tried to swing her tail at him again, but to her horror he caught it. She yelped in pain as he tugged it hard, forcing her to come closer, the sharp metal of the blade pushing dangerously into her neck. A malevolent grin crossed his face.
‘Not this time...’ He nodded and the only two guards not apprehended grabbed her. They pulled her away from the Razo-blade, one holding her tightly whilst the other pulled out her wriggling tail sharply, making her grit her teeth from the sting that tingled in her lower back.
Scarloe sneered to the girl as he walked around her, casually resting the blunt end of the sword on his shoulder. He examined her tail and stopped, giving a mock sigh.
‘I’m sorry, Wuulfe, but their will be know love in our relationship if you keep this thing...’ He slid his sword off of his shoulder and raised it above his head, keeping it unnervingly still against the rocking of the railship, ‘Now, this’ll hurt...’
~
The Dragon fell gracefully through the air and quickly levelled itself to the same speed as the racing railship, Vince peering through the windows. He spotted Kay first, then the glint of the razor edge lifted, and then where it was being aimed.
‘He’s going to cut off her tail! AVOS...’
‘Already on it, hold on,’ The ship’s computer replied calmly and took over, whilst Vince held on for dear life, watching in horror as the blade fell...
~
Kay’s eyes were shut as she braced herself for the pain. He sensitive ears heard the swish of the blade cutting the air...
And then a crash disturbed her next moments. The metal floor beneath her rocked violently and immediately Kay felt herself fall in the darkness with the two guards holding her captive, tumbling amongst several bodies. A clatter told her ears Scarloe had also lost his footing dropping his weapon in the process.
Her eyes were once more open and her first thoughts were of her tail. She checked her back and sure enough there it was, giving it a little wave to make sure it was still in one piece. She growled as she felt the two guards struggling. She rolled onto her feet and swung around, kicking both men in quick succession and sending them both into an early bedtime. She spotted Scarloe but he was already out for the count as well below the controls of the Railship. Her ears picked up a fainting yelling and she grinned, spinning around to see her rescuer...
~
The wing of the Night Dragon nudged the side of the railship just in time, knocking the wolf, girl and two guards off of their feet before the blade could come into contact with her tail. ‘YES!’ Vince punched the air in triumph and pushed the lever forward, releasing himself from the seat. He jumped up and raced for the door, spinning around and calling back to the ship as he did so.
‘Keep a steady speed with that railship! I’m getting back our girl...’ He leapt the stairs into the main hub and punched the button to open the door, sliding to the swinging car beside it. He lifted his wrist and spoke into his transmitter, ‘Level me up the railship door!’ The dragon inched forward, becoming parallel with the railship door. Through the bars of the door window he watched Kay roll to her feet and kick the guards into submission.
‘KAY! HERE!’ He yelled to get her attention, and saw her turn and grin. Leaning out of the doorway, he could see the sea tunnel fast approaching and knew they had less than a couple of minutes left.
‘KAY! OPEN THE DOOR!’
~
There was Vince, hovering beside the door, yelling to her. She raced forward and cupped her ears, yelling back.
‘WHAT?’
‘OPEN. THE. DOOR!’ He bellowed again. She hit the button, but the door whined and failed. She tried again, the same happened. She grabbed and struggled at the edge of the door but it was no use.
‘IT’S STUCK!’ She cried back, pressing herself against the door in a bid to push through it.
Vince thought fast, fumbled at his belt and pulled his blaster out, aiming and taking several shots at the lock on the door before hitting his target, pulverising it. Kay tugged and with a sullied groan of metal, the door opened. She had to grab the edges of the doorway as the intake of air forced in, trying to push her back. She pulled herself forward and squinted as she heard Vince yell again.
‘KAY! JUMP!’ His hand was outstretched, a foot or more away. He was trying to keep her concentration on him, because he knew if she looked down...
She looked down. The city lights speeding by painted the terror in her face.
‘VINCE! I CAN’T! IT’S TOO HIGH!’
Suddenly the railship’s motors revved at it began to go faster, and Kay’s doorway began to get away from Vince. He yelled, but it was lost on the wind battling between them.
Kay spun around, and found a somnolent-looking Scarloe forcing forward the controls the railship. He turned to her with mad eyes and sniggered.
‘Not far from the sea tunnels now, Kay!’
~
Vince snapped his wrist back up to his mouth.
‘AVOS, keep up with her!’ The ships engine flared and Vince grappled with the doorway as he flew forward. As the doorway began to come level with him again he raised his blaster ready to stun the controller of the airship. Instead he found himself lowering it in shock as he watched two bolts fire from a weapon in the hands of Kay...
~
As luck had it, the Razo-blade had fallen close to where Kay stood now. She saw the chance and leapt for it, making for the weapon and setting the blaster function on it.
‘Scarloe, slow us down or I’ll blast you!’ He laughed and got up slowly, using the controls to stable himself.
‘Wuulfe, I know you. You’re no killer. Give me back my Razo-blade...’ Kay growled and went to pull the trigger, but stopped. He was right, she couldn’t kill him. She began to lower her weapon, looking defeated.
‘You see. You can’t win...’ He began, but was stopped as suddenly Kay raised the gun again and let off two blasts in quick succession.
Neither hit him, but both were true to her aim. They hit the control panel above him, and with giving him pause to know what she’d done, it fell on top of him. For the second time, Scarloe was down and out.
By the time Kay was back at the doorway, Vince had caught up, and his arm was outstretched, more desperately than ever. The tunnels were looming fast now.
‘SCARLOE’S DOWN!’ She cried out to him.
‘I KNOW! I SAW, NOW JUMP!’
‘BUT I CAN STOP THE RAILSHIP!’
‘THEY WON’T BE UNCONCIOUS FOREVER, JUMP!’
‘IT’S TOO HIGH!’
‘KAY, THE TUNNEL IS COMING! JUMP!’
‘BUT...’
TUNNEL! JUMP!’
She looked down, the wind streaking through her hair. The lights of the city were growing thinner as they grew closer to the sea. Her eyes raised back up and meet his, and that moment he saw again the fright that clouded them.
‘I’m scared...’ she didn’t shout it, but Vince read her lips as she said the two words. He thrust his hand out further. The tunnel was seconds away.
‘I WON’T LET YOU FALL...’ She never took her eyes off of his as she made the hardest decision of hr life.
‘Trust me,’ He said, and this time she read his lips. She decided, took a deep breath, and leapt.
