Wow, that's really just messed up. Nice car just going up in flames like that. The guy said he was having car troubles? I imagine that couldn't be good with the company if the car did that on it's own. x.x;

Apparently, it's a well known problem where the transmission fluid pump fails and causes sputtering of fluid all inside the components under the hood. If the car is hot or running, the high temperatures inside the car will cause the fluid to ignite and set the vehicle on fire - which is exactly what happened. It didn't help that the guy was carrying a surfboard on top of the car which just added fuel to the fire.

Wow... I've only heard of the possibility, I've never heard of or seen it actually happening, so I guess it can happen. That's not very reassuring as a car owner. Hope that never happens to me! ><

I think that by the time the flames got to the surfboard, the car was a total goner regardless. No, I think the takeaway lesson here is: don't have a car made of flammable stuff. *goes to tear all the upholstery out of my car*
