Hard Drive Help

If anyone has a working pc hard drive larger than my tiny 40gb hard drive and willing to part with it, I REALLY need it.
This tiny one has been giving me trouble since I started using it. I know it isn't because of a bug, virus, or anything of the sort. It just sucks.
My system wasn't made for such a small one. ..The original one was 250gb.
I'd LOVE to get one that big again, but I doubt I will for this pc if I have to pay a lot for it.
I really can't afford it, not even a small hard drive.
So if your willing to give me a hard drive, but want me to buy it, I can't pay much. If I can at all
..I personally would rather just get a new pc and just use that until I can afford to build a pc myself since the one I have now is 7 or 8 years old with the exception of the hdd, all the hardware is factory..and probably will die soon. Especially since it's mine
What are those pc's built for?
I personally need one capable of running mulitple demanding programs and have great audio and video quality. All while having a large amount of memory. Even if it's just the larger of the more common HDD sizes since I can always get external HDDs added on.
But that's just what I want. What I want and what I can afford are 2 completely different things
