Clothing inspiration -- & I'm back! (kinda)

I know there are a bunch of you fancy artists out there that always make really great clothing designs for your characters, but I always seem to have trouble with that.
And I don't know if it is because I am retarded when it comes to designing clothes or what, but how exactly do you guys come up with outfits? Like...
Do you look up clothing on the net or just look at random things and suddenly have ideas or... idk. Wing it?
:( Cause really guys, I want to make bitching outfits for my characters too. Stop hogging all the talent and share your secrets.

To be honest, I haven't drawn in a ridiculous amount of time.
:( I was generally surprised all of the infrequent times I logged on to see that people were still watching me. Lolol.
BUT I'LL TRY TO GET ACTIVE AGAIN. orz /sob And not just with adoptables like before.
Although is anyone still interested in my adopts? 
If it seems like a fighting type, or a really 'cool' type, or whatever it is, I will think of an existing character with a similar feel and sorta base the design off of them.
Or I'll just think about types of clothing I like and mix and match them together until it looks good. xD
The only time I look up clothing is when it's a specific theme I'm going for and don't know how to go about it without references. Such as a steampunk theme or old English clothing or whatever else. ;w;
