The good news: Apple pushed a driver/scanner driver update.
The bad news is that it still crashes upon attempted scan.

damn that sucks . Why even release a driver if it makes it crash when you scan . That just a sign of poor QC

An OS update triggered - or revealed, more likely - a flaw in the driver, which the patch didn't fix. It was for a lot of (newer) devices, and not just mine, however.
