Video games as an art form
Hey hey, everyone!
Something I really enjoy these days is seeing how the stories, character development and acting in video games are really becoming better than they used to be. I also really enjoy when some decide to explore something that hasn't been done before in this kind of new media.
For example, in the puzzle game Braid, the way the worlds are drawn is really gorgeous and the cello soundtrack is just amazing. For a polar opposite that I also really enjoyed, there's the puzzle game LIMBO which is dark, creepy and very unsettling.
The games that Rock Star Games has been coming out with in the recent years are also examples of video games that I would definitely classify as art. Red Dead Redemption has a lead character that I really did care about and the characters he interacted with really made his story and the game really fascinating. The landscapes with the music in that western video game as you're galloping on your horse were awesome too.
A recent one I've really enjoyed is L.A. Noire. I really enjoy it since the characters that are meant to be "good guys" definitely have their flaws, creating a story that's not entirely black and white with heroes and villains. It's also really interesting to see how it touches on issues like the emotional damage that WWII veterans suffered, when it's something that was very neglected through history seeing how big of a victory that war was for the U.S.
Anyways, what are some video games that you guys have enjoyed and would classify as being art?

I'm envious you got to play L.A. Noire. I heard amazing reviews of it and it's something that piques my interest. However I have neither the console nor the time to play it :P.
Some games that jump out at me as being art are Final Fantasy X, the graphics + the story form a fantastic/tragic love story that could have jumped out of some sort of novel. I mean nowadays it wouldn't be a big deal, but a decade ago it was enthralling.
I'd call the Mario series art too, even though it lacks a coherent narrative is a mass of creativity in-and-of itself. I mean a plumber who has superhuman jumping abilities stomping on turtles, getting random coins and eating mushrooms? I mean Mario isn't the only who is eating 'shrooms to conjure that up.
And Metal Gear Solid <3. James Bond + Rambo + futurism + psychology + philosophy. How can you not call that art?
I just love the concept of a dystopia in general and that entropy takes it's toll on even the most technologically advanced societies.
