Quick question. No long essay this time, promise!
What is more important to you in genre fiction? That the story meets your expectations or that it exceeds them?
By genre fiction I mean just that- genres. Sci-fi, Fantasy, Alternative History, Murder/Mystery, Paranormal, Steampunk, and the like.

It should meet my expectations to the extent that I am drawn into the story. Some literature, however technically appealing can be hard to get into just because you have to think too much. However once part of the story I have the expectation of being subtly and skillfully surprised.
