You can publish it privately through any printing house that offers the service. Basically you pay for each book to be published, then resell it yourself c: Rather than having the publisher's house market the book for you, you do everything yourself and pay out of pocket for the first few.

The best way to do it is through preorders so you have the money already, then go through and use that to pay for all the books to get printed, and eventually it'll grow c:

I heard that if you want to copyright it cheaply, you have it mailed to yourself before you send it out to get published and have it where you need to sign for it. You can use it as evidence that way if anyone tries to pass your work for their own

It has been a while since I heard this from my friend that is publishing kids books so I have no idea if it would still hold or not. Just thought I would toss my 2 cents in

I've looked into publishing before because my sister knows someone in the business and she's an English major who has done some writing and editing herself. As far as copyrighting goes, you need a label which is usually just your name. Some people choose a writing name or something else to copyright it under, but it's generally just their name. Also if you do not self publish, then the publisher has their own copyright but they don't copyright the material, they copyright the fact that they're publishing it so that no one else can. Applying for a copyright is somewhat complex if you don't go through a company. Supposedly this is the form that you need to fill out http://www.copyright.gov/forms/formco2d.pdf and you need to take it to the U.S. copyright office for approval. Then, for publishing, you either need to self-publish which is fairly easy once you've got the copyright or if you want to try to get it into stores or mass published, you submit your work to several publishing companies and hope that they'll bite on what you send. Technically, you can send anything to any publisher from a short poem to a novel, even without an official copyright, as long as you are smart enough to put some unofficial thing that states its yours. If they like it then they should (key word since I'm not 100%) help you get a copyright and then market and publish the work.
