... so I'll try not to do it here.
I just discovered this nifty little gem of a video on the Escapist:

As a professional game developer myself, I have long held the view that better graphics DON'T make a game more fun. What makes a game fun is immersion, consistent look and feel, relevant risk/reward systems, etc.
Listen, all you gamers out there: More polygons and crazy visual effects may be cool to look at the first or second time you see them, but they DO. NOT. MAKE. THE. GAME. FUN. If the game industry could separate graphics from aesthetics and focus on what is truly important (aesthetics), then we would finally see the gem-to-garbage ratio of games begin to increase.

ironically im trying to go to school for game art
So how many NEW games are out that are not remakes, sequels or copies of other company's games? Without the "new and improved" graphics, they will just be the same old games from last year.
For a more level example, I would say Fallout and Metal Gear Solid 4. I loved Fallout, have played each one like, five times at least. Metal Gear, I was so bored looking at the pretty, I never touched it after beating it and barely consider it a game considering 90% of it is watching.
minecraft
Talk about total immersion...
I'll have to be rather careful when designing my own games, as I don't have any direct experience with this yet.
