Golden Compass

Okay, so I went to see Golden Compass last night, and I was really really really disappointed. So far almost every fur that has seen it has liked it, but I'm really not sure how. The acting (with a few exceptions) was terrible, the cgi actually looked really really bad, and they completely mangled a really good book by dumbing down the story and changing half the main events. Not to mention the fact they completely left out the ending which is the most important part of the book. *Sighs* I was actually upset by the end of the movie by how much stuff they had changed. I then thought that maybe my friends who hadn't read the book and saw the movie with me might enjoy it, but they all hated it as well, and pretty much everything they hated about it were the same problems I had with the movie. Honestly, the only scene in the movie worth watching is the polar bear fight.
*Sighs* I really hope this movie fails, because I do not want to see the other two books mangled as well. Anyways, save your money and go see either the Mist or Enchanted. The Mist had a crappy ending, but was good up until that point, and Enchanted was just a really cute fun film, that was somehow more intelligent then the Golden Compass adaptation. *Sighs* The only good thing that came out of seeing the movie was getting to watch the new Speed Racer movie. And wow... That looks like quite possibly the most ridiculous movie of all time. I almost feel guilty that I want to see it.

"Hey! We have to go to the ice lands to save the kids!" Next scene, "Now were at the port were we'll meet important characters that will help us on our journey through the ice lands!"
The fact that they made the ending a super, ultra cliffhanger by not showing whether they save that Lord guy was lame. They must really need that edge to try to draw people the next movie.
I really found this story interesting and the concept of this world is very fascinating but it felt that a lot of that world's mechanics were left out. Granted that they only have two hours to try to summarize an entire book to a mass of people with a short attention span but honestly, why bother to try to do so if its going to end up leaving out important plot points and disappoint fans. One the other hand, I believe they make books into movies (besides the lack of originality) as an attempt to reach out and make fans of people who haven't read the book series rather than make the movies for people who have already fans of the series.
The polar bear scene was awesome at least and the movie did peak my interest. I also have to agree with you on the preview for Speed Racer; I want to see it and I hate myself for it.
Lets be thankful the don't talk like in the cartoon:
"Ha ha, Speed Racer! You cannot win this race! Ha ha!" "Ha ha! I must win this race! Ha ha!"
I know I won't be seeing it, though. It just looks like another dull CGI-tastic kid's fantasy epic. *yawn*
