Game of The Year

And just days later, last night I was watching the local gamer TV show Good Game, where they were handing out 2007 awards, when they gave Game of the Year to... Portal!. I tell you, that made my day.

They also gave 2007's Most Memorable Moment to Portal's credits song! "Amazing that we've picked a bit of a game where you basically have to do nothing but watch a credit roller as our most memorable moment in gaming of the year!" Ha!

WTF!!!! I had no idea that a Windows emulator/interface was good enough to run a modern Windows game under Linux. I would have thought it to be either slow or buggy or both. I am amazed and delighted! I visited Wine HQ. Can anyone give me an independent appraisal of how well Wine runs Windows apps under Mac OS X (a flavor of free BCD UNIX)?

Wine's doing quite well. For the most part following instructions and howtos out there worked. It took a little prodding to set up (and overnight to download through Steam, but that's hardly Wine's fault), and it only works in DirectX 8.0 mode at the moment (apparently the latest Wine will do DX9.0 mode without the graphics artifacts). Actual gameplay is fine. I didn't mention it before, but one big reason I decided to get it was that, along with being informed that it was good, I was also informed that it worked almost perfectly in Wine. Sure enough.

Not sure about Mac OS X Wine. I can't give you an appraisal myself, never tried it, but googling has shown me that it does exist: Darwine. This may also be of interest.
