ATTN: PEOPLE WHO DRIVE
Ok people. It's simple: learn how to drive. Just because you have a license with your name and face on it that proclaims you passed a test does not mean that you are, indeed, a good driver.
Good drivers are courteous. If someone needs to get over, then let them over. Don't hover in their blind spots hoping that they'll not hit you. Give them some room.
Good drivers know how to change lanes. DO NOT SLOW DOWN. Slowing down to change lanes is not safe. I thought they taught you this in driver's ed.
Drivers of automatic transmissions: do NOT stop or slow down, then creep up to a stop sign or stop light. People on the road with manuals HATE this, because all it does is put excess wear on clutches, and frankly, it's annoying to have to constantly move forward a little teeny bit at a time, or risk getting honked at by the rude person behind them. Just stop where you want to be when the light changes. It's that simple.
Drivers of manual transmissions: don't roll back. If you're on a hill and you need to stop, just stop. Don't roll back down the hill. You could surprise a driver behind you, and they could do something rash. As a side note to that, don't keep your car in place on a hill by using the clutch. All you are doing is wearing it down faster.
WHEN THERE IS STOP AND GO TRAFFIC: Don't speed up to ride the back end of the car in front of you, so when they happen to be a bad driver and slam on their brakes for who knows what, you don't slam on your brakes, and the person behind you, etc. Give them a little room. Learn throttle control. Don't drive up on someone going slower than you and hit your brakes. That just causes accidents and traffic problems.
Be nice to truckers, and they will be nice to you. If a big-rig wants over, let him over. You can go around him later.
When there's an emergency vehicle, get out of the way. They are more important than you. It's that simple.
The left lanes (in the U.S.) are the FAST lanes. If you want to go slow, stay to the right, as far right as you can get. If you were passed on the right-hand side, then you are going too slow for your lane.
If there's someone behind you in the left lane going faster than you are, get over, or speed up. Choose wisely.
Use your blinkers. Duh.
At dusk or dawn, when the sky is light but the road is dark, do NOT use your high-beams. Don't use your high-beams as running lights, either. It's not safer, it just pisses people off. A smarter alternative is to just turn on your marker lights, or fog lights if your car is so equipped. Headlights should really only be on at night, when you need them to see. Your owner's manual will detail how to turn on these lights if you don't know how.
Fix wobbly headlights. That shit's annoying.
If your blinker is going really really fast, it means one of the bulbs is burned out. Fix it.
Don't honk at friends in traffic, unless they deserve it.
Sorry that was so long, those of you who read this far. I needed to say this, hoping that some of you will go away learning something, or perhaps just remembering that you aren't the only person on the road.
