Craigslist and thrift stores!

I was able to snag a few lovely cheap ones when I moved. :)

I'm already on the hunt. Turns out the Ham has some great thrift stores. Seattle has even more. Let the treasure hunt begin!

Whoo! Good to hear your travels went well :D That's one hell of a drive (I should know, I've done it 12 times now xD)!

12 times?? That's just plain insane, man! This is the first time I've ever done (nearly) all of the 1 as a grown-up, on my own, and while I wouldn't compare it to climbing Everest, I did love it so much I plan to do it again. 12 times? Hmm. Maybe not THAT many times. :)

I did it twice, took a week break, then did it another six within the same week (Though this was AV to Portland), again for Comic-Con, and yet again to go to SoCal to visit family. Half of those were done in a straight shot and the other half had a single night intermission. I like car trips and all, but I think next time I'll take a plane ^..^'

Christ, a plane by all means! That portion of the 5 from the Bay Area is mind-numbing. I've done it plenty and feel exactly as you do. The 1, on the other hand, becomes increasingly amazing once you hit Santa Barbara. The Marin Headlands, Point Reyes, Big Sur, and the territory around Eureka are so lovely I'm going to find a way to visit 'em again.

The Grapevine is definitely a bore, and the fields of cows make it difficult to breathe for a bit xD
Oh yeah, love the Shasta, Weed, and Ashland area. Tons of trees with clouds coming out of them as though they were on fire or something. It looks like something out of a fantasy painting :)

That area (around Shasta through Lassen) is stunning stuff. I love that whole stretch of territory along the Cascades. Two very different kinds of beauty, right down the seam of the West Coast.

Oh what an adventure! Maybe it's not like taking a train in Europe, but I've heard the coastal run is very pretty indeed, and I think there's an Amtrak stop in B-ham, even! I'd love having more than an afternoon to babble and getting to play host would go some way towards making it up to you for skipping town without a goodbye beer. :/

Vancouver is a joy. Cosmopolitan city plus looming mountains. A giant park with sea otters and dolphins in the middle. What's not to love?

I might have a few! I just got back from France, where I stayed with monks in a 18th century monastery.

That sounds too damn cool for school. What had you cloistered with a posse of monks? Was this research for a book or some such?

Yay for safe moves! I've been looking to the Northwest for possible employment when I'm done with school. Need a change from the East Coast. :)

I'm getting my MLIS (Master's of Library/Info Science) and will be done in December!

It's so beautiful out there, and seems so much more laid back than NYC. :)

NYC has its allure to a fellow like me, who's only been there once; I want to go back for another visit. But let me sing the praises of the Great Northwest! West Coast folks do tend to be more laid-back. And the scenery! We have the only temperate rainforest in North America on the peninsula, hot springs, beautiful forests, the Puget Sound for kayaking, fishing and whale-watching, trails all over for hiking and biking. The Vancouver to Portland corridor is gorgeous. We love good food, beer, wine and coffee (and we're rather fond of tea, too). And we're huge readers in need of great librarians!! :D
