I use upholstery adhesive. Made specially for gluing foam to fabric and vice versa. Works like a beast.

I've heard of an adhesive that's spray on called 77. ...Or something akin to that. Just the only con may be the fumes, of course.

Its made by 3M. Super 77 and I think an 88 as well. You need to let it tack up first before attaching both pieces together.

ehhhh, both of those disintegrate after about a year. I'd only ever use it as a temporary thing akin to pinning.

Well I mean, if you use a respirator its perfectly fine once dry. But I've worked with things that have been "88 foam-fast"-ed about 1.5-2 years after they were made, and the stuff has just let go completely. It is plenty tacky at first, and stays fine as long as it isn't tugged on. So if you wanted to make a giant cookie and 88-ed the fabric down into the crevices, it would be fine for a long while, as long as the fabric edges were finished and the 88 wasn't under any stress to pull it out. I wouldn't use it to secure fur on a fursuit head because of the constant stress from pulling the head on, face getting squished from hugging, rough play, transport, and all the other stress fursuit heads go under. Hot glue sounds cheap but really is the way to go :/ I've worked with a bunch of kinds of glues and really it is the best way for securing fabric to foam in the long run.

Leave a little more ease there and push it in with your fingers or a tool until it cool. I don't use pins for this anymore, ever since I accidentally left one in. O_O;

yeah, this is what I do at the moment. It works OK for the most part, it just doesn't feel very professional if you know what I mean.

No, I don't know what you mean actually. What do you think it should be like?
I mean, I make professional mascot costumes at a company, we show definition by pressing the fur down with popsicle sticks as the glue cools. Nothing really fancy about it.

haha, fair enough. I dunno, I always expected pro companies to use sprays, I'm not insulting hotglue (I use it after all), it just feels very messy and you have to be so quick to make it work. It might just be the fact that *I'M* messy :P

Spray glues are wayyyy over rated. We only use them for temporary holds, I can't imagine anyone actually using Super 77 and nothing else to construct a head.

It's definitely a tedious part of head construction (as is, well, quite a bit of suit building in general :p) If gluing a join, I have a longer tipped glue gun I use to apply glue to the very edge without seeping, definitely helps a bit with tighter areas. And really I just try to plan the order in which I glue, so as not to make any one area too difficult to get to.

I always overcut my seam allowance for joints, so I can fold them over themselves and use a clay sculpting knife to work them into a precut groove, can be glued in from there. No gross raw edges and doesn't inhibit hinge functioning. And you can always take some away. Corners aren't so bad.. if the fur is thick you can always dart and topstitch it into place if you feel comfortable with that kind of thing.

I usually hot glue,seems to work fine for me,but at times when iv ran out of hot glue I find copydex is quite good,its just time consuming waiting on it to become tacky on the fur so the foam doesn't absorb all the moisture,works nice though as its made for upholstery and haberdashery

I like to sew the entirety of the head fur up, save for the seam up the middle of the back of the head. It all gets glued then, being pulled on like a glove, then a good ladder stitch up the left over opening at the back finished the furring.
Straight up ears are made, furred and attached before I fur, the glove has slots for the ears, which I then run around the base and sew together.

So essentially, I don't trust myself to glue seams x3

I sew the whole of the head up and invert it, using copydex to glue it down as I roll it over the foamwork. Keeps it nice and tight and no mouth issues. I line my mouths in fleece, with the stretch vertical, and sew it into the fur instead of gluing it on the foam beforehand, so there are no bare fur-edge seams and no faffing around. Just have to make sure your patterns are nicely symmetrical :)
Obviously this method wouldn't work on resin heads, in which case I would do the face as one piece, glue it on and sew the back of the head onto it.

This is all very helpful info . I'm building my first fursuit heads and this answers a few questions that I had. Not trying to hijack this thread or anything, but is stitching the head fur better than just gluing it down in separate pieces?
