When did you realized you were a fan of MLP?
Like many of you, I was really skeptical when I heard about the reboot of the MLP franchise. In the past I'd seen series come and go. Corporate America likes to repeat a winning formula and generally speaking they do so with a much smaller budget since they know that the franchise in question usually has a bit of nostalgia based on it and there's simply not much required to restart it. A reboot is usually given very little attention to detail in this regard since it's considered a 'safe bet' and it's easy to convince investors that instead of trying to create a risky new franchise. It's far easier working with an established franchise, wringing the last golden drops of nostalgia out of their fanbase, leaving the franchise used up and tossed aside. There's so much of this happening, in fact I wonder what kids will be nostalgic ABOUT when they are in their thirties.
There's also a perception that cartoons are simply 'big dumb loud things to sell crap to kids for. They don't mean anything, they're just something to mesmerize a kid long enough so mom and dad can get some peace.' I'd always liked animation, and was saddened in recent years at the decline in quality and the number of new shows.
Maybe they always had been a corporate shill, but at one time they were magical, fun and amazing. It was refreshing to see a lot of the animation from Cartoon Network in recent years. Such noteworthy titles as 'Samurai Jack' 'Powerpuff Girls' and many more. So when I finally got around to watching some of it I was blown away by the quality and care that they had used to create this universe. Everyone was alive had their own personalities. The music was pretty good to listen to, and the lessons -oh sweet lord the lessons were actually well written and easy to understand.
This in itself is the corporate by product shows, you see any of them and you can see 'the obligatory sharing eposide' the 'believing in yourself episode' and so on.

"My little pony reboot? I suppose, they're remaking everything else....."

"The animation's actually pretty good for flash, as is the music....and a lot of good people from my favorite series are working on this...seriously?

FA+

It hit me it was a lot liek older toons that have quality humor. The characters are likable and the colors vibrant, so pleasing to look at.
I was pretty much the same.
1. Wtf internet why are you obsessing over a fucking girls cartoon
2. Hm, this isn't so bad...I think...?
3. Oh god why am I watching this still?
4. ???
5. PONY PONY PONY PONY PONY
Why do such revivals fail time and again? I think on some level kids can tell whether a show is worth their time or not and once the original appeal wears thin, it fades away.
It just goes to show that if you take the time to create something, on some level there'll be something there for everyone to enjoy
It also helped that the music is by the one who does the songs for "Martha Speaks" (It has "bloviates" in the main title theme. Dayum!) Heck, the same studio in Canada does both.
I'm a Homestuck guy,
I aint gotta explain shit.
So I watched it to legitimize my hate for it. But it turned out I giggled more then I scowled.
By that evening I realized I had watched every episode, and made my own brony.
Thus, I am a brony now. ;-;
The first episode I saw was episode 16....so many artists I know can relate to that episode since each pony so closely represented a type of commissioner. I'll admit I haven't done many commissions myself, but I can see that a lot of that rings true, after that, I was hooked!
I originally gave it a try because so many animators from my favorite shows were involved in it, and was pretty impressed with the production value. So little animation is valued in the US beyond something Disney produces.
The end of the second episode had me smiling ear to ear, and clamoring for more. By the end of 13 episodes I had had already bought Fluttershy and Applejack....
I swear My little pony has a higher addiction rate than Cocanie now.
There was a time when I asked myself "Why am I interested in a girls' television show that's a revival from the 1980's?" it's because I'd seen so many bad reboots of series from my childhood that were simply terrible. A lot of people from my favorites series like 'Samurai Jack' and 'The powerpuff girls' are working on this one too, and that's what originally convinced me to give it a try.
"don't like magic-based fantasy"
I know you probly prefer sci-fy,
but as a warhammer fantasy and warhammer 40k person, when someone says something like that, I go "Oxymoron, fantasy = magic"
No rudeness or insult meant, just something that made me laugh.
When the ponies were all scared by Pinkie Pie's tales of the curses caused by the zebra pony, and Twilight Sparkle said curses weren't real - Rainbow Dash pointed out that since Twilight herself employs magic spells - then curses must logically be real as well.
When a show contradicts it's own continuity - that's the writer making a choice to do so.
It makes no sense. It doesn't have to be logical because "it's magic." As Buster Bunny once said:" Thank you, Lazy Writer." When anything is possible through magic - there's little need to do things with reasoning, so it just negates the whole thing for me.
No offence meant here either. The MLP are cute and funny. It's their sudden and peculiar state of overwhelming popularity that made me stop watching.
