joining works like parenting, only it's control j instead of p. the joined meshes or other objects then behave, for all practical purposes have become, one single object, which may be useful for building complex shapes, but then the same texture is applied to all of it, unless you do different texture on different faces with multi-texture materials thing. (which is easier to understand, from how explictly they're treated seperately, materials and textures, in 2.5x)
the book "mastering blender" was written before 2.5x was stabilized, but it (2.5x, which is now up to 2.59 and stable) fallows most of what its authors recomended"
there's a tab bar in the preferences dialog box that says "add-ons" on it. click that and you'll find them. then click the check box beside the ones you want to enable. the ones that are unstable have a little warning icon in them to indicate this.
There link
when you open that, you'll see a row of tabs across the top of it. (it comes up in "system"). click on the "add-ons"; its the one in the middle. that comes up in "all" and there you are.
you can then click on "import export". or just scroll down to it.
1. very small (object) of menu next to (View, Select, Object)
2. popmenu and click User Preferences
3. ... ... ... etc.
in that you can select every feature you want to enable or disable, all the py scripts that came with it, including all the import and export ones. and a lot of other nice useful things. like the landscape and squorus primatives which i find very useful.
