Self Defence as a Women.
So I have a dilemma. Through my life I have taken martial arts here and there and I always enjoyed it. I have been in Judo and Taekwondo. Now in transitioning I realize that the need for self defence exists more now than ever as I am not the type of girl who wants to be victimised nor would I allow it to happen.
My issue is I want to join fencing very badly. It's beautiful, elegant, and challenging as well as within my budget. However it is not practical as a martial art or as self defence and it's application is limited... as much as I want to join I am also being offered to join Kajukenpo Kung Fu which would be very practical self defense... I have been interested in Kung Fu but at the same time I do not want to be there.
However I need to practice self defence... the fencing class is accepting of me being transgender and didn't bat an eyelash, the kung fu instructor is fine with it but expects I will be teased. I don't mind the teasing as I would be there to learn to fight better.... I am just having such a hard time choosing.
Edit: Also fencing fits my work schedule....feck

all i can say is it's ya choise and ya do what ya want
I'd personally have you join my kick-boxing group if you could - everybody teases each other, so no one person is targetted, and any bullying is punished in the same way the army punishes - lots and lots of press-ups =D Also, if anyone is hurt, the tutor is very conciderate, so all in all, it's a very close knit class.
I just hope the Kung Fu has a similar system.
Then, once proficient enough to kick major ass, take fencing!
If you don't choos isshinryu< i wish you the best of luck.
*sigh* Still, I know a lot about martial arts, even outside of karate, so if you want, I can still help some. I'm happy to do whatever I can.
I even took a self-defense course at my college as part of the physical education requirement, and was paired off against another girl to practice self-defense against punches. In doing so, I dialed back speed and power by over 85% and she simply did basic parries. The whole time, I felt like a bully, and a waste of time, because if I had the desire to actually punch her, I would have done so and she would not have been able to stop me.
Other than that, doing sets of moves has zero combat application whatsoever other than to condition you, and unless you actually practice realistic scenarios of attacks or do sparring, you learn next to nothing that is useful apart from the most basic of techniques.
I carry multiple weapons on my person and in my car whenever legal, and sometimes... well, I'd rather be judged by twelve than carried by six.
My advice is to watch a few videos of basic self-defense techniques on the internet, practice them, condition yourself physically so that you're not weak, and condition yourself mentally so that you value your blood more than that of a potential assailant's.
Besides that, there's no reason to fight fair. I have never had to fight anyone in my life, but if I do, I will fight to win and that is all.
