Kickin' ass for 30 years and growing..
I know this journal is going to be filled with rage and angst but Deal with it or stop reading right here. The journal doesn't pertain to my friends or people who have commissioned me.
/Rant Begin
I want to know what the deal is. I am always posting up journals about me being open for commissions and I get absolutely NO ONE, except for a scarce few who are my friends....but even than it is rare. I see artists with crappier artwork than me getting more commissions and I want to know WHY I don't have any. It's not like my artwork is shit. It's not. I like how I have progressed over the years. It's not that I am a complete BITCH to people...because in all honesty, I'm not.
It's not even worth drawing anymore if people who don't even bloody have their own STYLE of drawing get more commissions than I do. Granted the Disney style art is cute, but it's not original, just like the sonic style isn't original. I've even lowered my prices drastically to attract people. That didn't work. I have drawing for donations things going. That didn't work. Even fucking had $1 iron artist sketches. THAT DIDN'T EVEN WORK!
I'm so sick and tired of people commenting on my journals saying, 'Oh if I had the money I'd totally buy art from you.." Some of you mean it, this isn't directed at you. Most people who say this to me go ahead and the very same day or the next day go and spend a bank roll of another artist. That's cool. I don't mind that, but don't fucking patronize me by telling me, "If you had the money..." Fuck you. No you wouldn't even if you had the money. You'd rather get yourself drawing in a well known, OVERUSED style. That's cool. I don't mind. More power to the artists that can feed the masses with stale cuteness.
I just really want to know if there is a terrible rumor going around that stifles people's want to buy art from me. I have over 500 watchers....and I only have 2 continuous commissioners. They are awesome friends. :3
I want people to have the balls enough to tell me what the fuck is going on. I want to know if some dumb cunt ruined my rep and people aren't brace enough to tell it to me straight. Blah....I'm about to stop coming on here and will if that's the case.

honestly? and this is as blunt so it will seem offensive to some... but furries in general are fickle and terribly irresponsible with their money. add in a pathelogical desire to remain pleasing to nearly everyone they meet, even if it means outright lying, and you have a very volatile combination.
i'm not really one to talk about how to GET popular since i'm very much not (unless you count the drama i tend to get embroiled in.) but what i would like to suggest is to keep doing the thing you like to do because you like to do it. if you have a day-job or other source of reliable income, then that frees you up to do the drawings you want which you will spend much more time on than a general commission. if you keep putting out consistent quality, sooner or later people will gravitate towards your profile and your stuff.
past that, well, if you want to make money off of commissions, maybe just keep the queue open with a couple slots. advertise in a journal once in a while and post a lot. it may sound kinda harsh but unless you're a popufur, it's a numbers game and your odds will improve the more pieces you submit... and the upside to that is the more drawings you do, the better your ability will come through.
if you have access, definately take up some life-drawing sessions and learn to draw what you see, not what you think ought to be there (even some of the pro's around here haven't gotten past that one...)
now, for the cynicism...
style... is just an amalgam of the errors that you develop and the errors of the people you learn from. so, it kinda makes me wonder when someone says they want to improve but they also want to have a distinct style. also, avoid anime like the plague... it's all too stylized and won't really help you much. not saying western animation styles are any better or worse... just, don't focus on the anime or the anime eyes. (have you seen the picture series of people rendered in real flesh with anime proportions? yeah, it's fucking scary shit and will disturb the fuck out of you.)
if you want, one thing that helped me was to keep drawing. set yourself a quota for every weekday where you practice heads, or hands, or feet, or torsos, or legs, or arms, etc... learn to find a way of doing it that helps you and throw out the stuff that holds you back. i.e. that "block in with tubes and cubes" method might work for you to speed things up... or it might hinder you... use your best judgement.
as for redlining, that's tricky since there are some out there that know their shit but htere are also some out there that LOVELOVELOVE to make themselves the "teacher" when they really have no business trying. it's a mixed bag, really.
I do agree with you that some artists have no business on being teachers when they have much to learn themselves.
I am always nice, even lowered my prices. So people being put off by this journal becuase it is like 2 weeks old, is rather dumb. No Offense.
So....yeah...thank for the advice I guess. It's just common sense that you gave. I guess you don't think I have any of that either. :V
